what's the little lever on the gas cap of my honda generator for? i can't remember if it should be on or off.

— asked by Dave

That's the fuel filler cap vent lever. Wrong position = engine won't run or fuel may leak.

  • ON Position: Use this to run the engine. It vents the fuel tank, allowing fuel to flow to the carburetor.
  • OFF Position: Use this for storage or transport. It seals the tank to reduce fuel leakage and vapor escape.

Step to fix a no-start: Check the lever. If it's OFF, switch it to ON. Always allow the engine to cool before switching it to OFF for storage.

HEADS UP: When refueling, do not fill past the upper level mark (red) on the fuel strainer. After refueling, tighten the cap until it clicks and move the generator at least 10 feet away from the fueling spot before starting.
