Diagnosis
The discrepancy in temperature readings on your ecobee SmartThermostat Premium is typically caused by "wall draft" or "thermal leakage." Because the thermostat is mounted to the wall, there is a hole where the low-voltage wires enter the device. In many homes, the interior of the wall cavity acts as a chimney, pulling warm air from the basement or attic and pushing it directly into the back of the thermostat housing. This warm air hits the internal thermistor, tricking the device into thinking the ambient room temperature is higher than it actually is. You can confirm this by removing the thermostat from its backplate and placing a digital probe thermometer directly into the wire hole. If the probe shows a temperature significantly higher than the room air, you have a draft issue. Additionally, if the thermostat is installed on an exterior wall or near a heat-producing appliance (like a lamp or TV), radiant heat can soak into the plastic chassis, causing a consistent "offset" or "drift" in the reading.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must first isolate the sensor from the wall cavity and then calibrate the software to match your reference thermometer.
- Seal the Wall Cavity: Carefully pull the ecobee SmartThermostat Premium off its backplate. Locate the hole where the wires emerge from the drywall. Use a small amount of plumber's putty, silicone sealant, or a piece of foam insulation to plug the hole around the wires. Ensure the seal is airtight so no air from inside the wall can reach the back of the device.
- Stabilize the Environment: Place a calibrated, high-accuracy digital thermometer (such as a NIST-certified probe) on a flat surface directly next to the thermostat. Leave it there for at least 30 minutes to allow both devices to reach thermal equilibrium.
- Access Calibration Settings: On the thermostat screen, tap the Main Menu (three horizontal lines).
- Navigate to Thresholds: Go to Settings > Installation Settings > Thresholds > Temperature Correction.
- Apply the Offset: If your ecobee reads 75°F but your trusted thermometer reads 72°F, you need a -3°F correction. Use the arrows to adjust the value to -3.
- Save and Verify: Exit the menu and wait 15 minutes. The display should now reflect the accurate room temperature.
If That Didn't Work
- Relocate Remote Sensors: If the main unit is permanently affected by a heat source (like a nearby kitchen or sunlight), go to Main Menu > Sensors and designate a SmartSensor in a neutral part of the house as the primary temperature source. This ignores the main unit's internal sensor entirely for HVAC triggering.
- Check for "Heat Soak": If the thermostat is mounted on a wall that shares a boundary with a laundry room or furnace, the wall itself may be radiating heat. In this case, install a 1/4-inch plastic or acrylic spacer between the backplate and the wall to create a small air gap.
- Update Firmware: Ensure your device is on the latest firmware version. Occasionally, ecobee releases sensor logic updates that improve the accuracy of the internal thermistor's compensation algorithm.
- Verify Power Stability: If you are using a Power Extender Kit (PEK) or have unstable 24V power, the internal components can occasionally overheat, causing a "false high" reading. Check your C-wire connection for tightness and corrosion.
Heads Up
- Avoid using expanding spray foam to seal the wire hole; if you ever need to replace the unit or pull new wires, the hardened foam can damage the wiring or the drywall.
- Do not calibrate the thermostat while the HVAC system is actively running (heating or cooling), as the airflow from the vents will skew the reading and lead to an inaccurate offset.
- If you use a "Temperature Correction" of more than 5 degrees, it is a sign of a serious installation flaw (like a direct vent leak) rather than a simple calibration need.
- Keep the thermostat away from direct sunlight or drafty windows, as these "micro-climates" will override any software calibration you apply.
