This typically happens when the descaling process was not completed in the exact sequence the internal logic expects, or if the water tank was emptied before the final rinse cycle was fully registered by the flow meter. Because the machine thinks it is still in the middle of a chemical cleaning process, it disables all brewing functions to prevent the user from consuming caustic descaling solution. You can confirm this is a software lock rather than a hardware failure if the light is a steady, unchanging red (not flashing) and the machine is completely unresponsive to the Espresso or Lungo buttons. This state is common if the machine was powered off prematurely or if there was a momentary power flicker during the final rinse phase, causing the onboard memory to hang between the "descale" and "ready" modes.
How to Fix It
To clear the error state and force the machine back into its standard operating mode, you must perform a hard power cycle and a logic reset. Follow these steps precisely:
- Turn the machine off using the power button and immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Do not just turn it off; physical disconnection from the power source is required to drain the capacitors.
- Wait for exactly 3 minutes. This ensures the internal control board has completely discharged and the volatile memory is cleared.
- While the machine is still unplugged, press and hold both the Espresso and Lungo buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds. This acts as a manual discharge of any remaining current in the button circuitry.
- Ensure the water tank is filled to the MAX line with fresh, filtered water and that the milk carafe is properly seated and locked into the machine.
- Plug the machine back into the wall outlet.
- Press the power button once. The machine should enter a brief startup sequence where the lights flash. If the red light has vanished, the machine is now in "Ready" mode.
- Run one full Lungo cycle (large cup) without a capsule to flush any remaining air pockets from the pump that may have occurred during the descaling process.
If That Didn't Work
- Force a Manual Descale Exit: If the red light persists, the machine may still be expecting the final rinse. Fill the tank, place a large container under the spout, and press the Lungo button once. Even if the light is red, some firmware versions will allow a "flush" to trigger. Let the machine run until the tank is empty, then refill and repeat.

- Factory Reset Attempt: Press and hold the Lungo button for 5 seconds while the machine is powering on. This can sometimes force the machine to ignore the previous interrupted cycle and return to the home screen.
