The accumulation of watery sludge in the Lattissima One capsule container is typically caused by a failure in the "extraction-to-evacuation" cycle. In a healthy machine, the high-pressure pump forces water through the capsule, and the remaining liquid is pushed out through the bottom puncture plate into the waste bin. When you see standing water or a "sludge" buildup, it means the liquid is being trapped in the brewing chamber and slowly leaking into the bin rather than being flushed out instantly. This is most often caused by a buildup of coffee oils and calcium deposits within the four small drainage apertures located on the grey puncture plate. When these holes are partially occluded, the used capsule acts like a plug, holding water in the chamber. Once the brew cycle ends and the pressure drops, the remaining water slowly seeps through the blockage, filling the container with a diluted, watery residue that overflows because it cannot drain efficiently through the machine's internal chassis. You can confirm this by removing the capsule container and checking if the bottom of the brewing head is dripping slowly for several minutes after a brew has finished.
How to Fix It
To resolve the drainage issue and clear the internal blockages, follow these precise steps:
- Power off the Lattissima One and unplug it from the wall outlet to ensure total safety.
- Open the lever to the fully open position and remove the used capsule.
- Remove the capsule container (the waste bin) and the drip tray to expose the underside of the brewing head.
- Locate the grey puncture plate. Look for the four small circular exit holes where the coffee is meant to drain.
- Using a thin sewing needle or the specialized cleaning pin tool, gently insert the pin into each of the four holes. Wiggle the pin slightly to break up any hardened coffee oils or limescale crystals. Do not push too hard to avoid damaging the plastic housing.
- Take a damp, lint-free microfiber cloth and wipe the rubber sealing ring (the O-ring) around the capsule chamber. Ensure there are no coffee grounds trapped in the groove, as this prevents a tight seal and causes water to leak sideways into the bin.
- Run a "blank shot" (brewing without a capsule) three times in a row using the Lungo setting. This flushes out any loosened debris from the puncture plate.
- Empty the container and dry the area completely before reassembling.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Deep Descaling Cycle: If the sludge persists, you likely have internal scale buildup restricting flow. Use a Nespresso-approved descaling kit. Fill the water tank to the max line with the descaling solution, enter descaling mode by holding the Lungo button for 5 seconds, and run the entire cycle. This removes calcium deposits that often narrow the drainage channels.
- Inspect the Capsule Compatibility: If you are using third-party or "compatible" capsules, the aluminum foil may be thicker than original Nespresso pods. This prevents the puncture needles from fully piercing the bottom of the pod, trapping water inside. Switch to original Nespresso capsules for 5 brews to see if the overflow stops; if it does, the issue is the pod material, not the machine.
- Clean the Internal Waste Chute: Remove the capsule container and look upward into the machine's chassis. Use a flashlight to check for a "coffee bridge" (a clump of wet grounds) stuck in the chute between the brew head and the bin. Use a pipe cleaner or a flexible brush to clear any obstructions in this vertical channel.
- Check the Pump Pressure: If the coffee is coming out very slowly (dripping rather than flowing), the pump may be failing or air-locked. Perform a "priming" sequence by running the machine without a pod and without the drip tray to force air bubbles out of the system.

- Daily Maintenance: Empty the capsule container every 10-12 pods. Allowing used pods to sit and decompose creates a sticky residue that clogs the puncture plate faster.
- Avoid Overfilling: Never fill the water tank beyond the maximum fill line, as this can cause air pockets to form in the pump, leading to inconsistent pressure and poor drainage.
- Water Quality: Use filtered water instead of hard tap water to prevent the rapid buildup of limescale in the drainage apertures.
- Seal Care: Every month, apply a tiny amount of food-grade silicone grease to the rubber sealing ring to keep it supple and ensure a watertight seal during extraction.
