The Nespresso Lattissima One utilizes a thermoblock heating system—a compact heat exchanger where water flows through a metal pipe wrapped around a heating element. When coffee emerges lukewarm despite high settings, the most common culprit is calcium carbonate buildup (limescale). Scale acts as a thermal insulator, coating the internal walls of the thermoblock and preventing the heating element from efficiently transferring heat to the water flowing through the pipe. Even if the element is functioning, the scale creates a barrier that drops the exit temperature significantly. Another contributing factor is "thermal mass loss." Because the Lattissima One has a relatively small internal boiler and a long pathway to the spout, the heat is absorbed by the internal tubing and the cold brew head before the coffee ever hits the cup. If the machine has been idling for 10 minutes, the water sitting in the lines has cooled, and the first shot will invariably be lukewarm. You can confirm a scaling issue if you notice a slight decrease in flow rate or a "hissing" sound during the heating phase that lasts longer than usual.
How to Fix It
To restore the temperature to the optimal 190°F (88°C) range, follow this precise recalibration and cleaning sequence:
- Adjust Temperature Settings: Power on the machine. Press and hold the Espresso button for approximately 3 seconds. The temperature indicator lights will begin to cycle. Continue holding or tapping until the 'High' temperature LED is illuminated. Release the button to lock in this setting.
- Deep Descaling Cycle: Fill the water tank with 500ml of water mixed with one Nespresso Descaling Kit (100ml solution). Ensure the drip tray is empty. Press and hold the Espresso and Latte buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to enter descaling mode. The lights will blink. Press the Espresso button to start the flow. Let the solution run through completely.
- System Flush: Rinse the water tank thoroughly and refill it with fresh, filtered water. Press the Espresso button again to run at least two full tanks of water through the system to purge all citric acid residues from the thermoblock.
- The Thermal Prime: Before inserting a capsule, run one "blank" espresso cycle (water only) into a pre-warmed ceramic cup. This heats the internal plumbing and the brew head, ensuring the actual coffee doesn't lose 10-15 degrees of heat upon contact with the machine's internals.
If That Didn't Work
- Pre-heat the Cup: The Lattissima One produces a small volume of liquid. If you use a cold ceramic or glass mug, the cup will act as a heat sink, sucking the temperature out of the espresso instantly. Rinse your cup with boiling water from a kettle immediately before brewing.
- Check the Milk Frother Temperature: If the coffee is hot but the milk is lukewarm, the issue is likely residue in the milk conduit. Use the "Clean" function and a damp cloth to wipe the milk spout. Dried milk proteins can insulate the steam path, reducing the heat transferred to the milk.
- Switch to Distilled/Filtered Water: If you live in a hard-water area, the machine will re-scale within two weeks. Use a filtered water pitcher (like Brita) to fill the reservoir. This prevents the thermoblock from insulating again and maintains consistent temperature over months of use.
- Inspect the Power Source: Ensure the machine is plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than a crowded power strip. While rare, inconsistent voltage can occasionally affect the peak performance of the heating element in high-wattage thermoblock machines.
Heads Up
- Perform a descaling cycle every 3 months, or every 300 capsules, to prevent permanent thermoblock failure.
- Avoid using vinegar for descaling; the acetic acid can damage the internal rubber seals and leave a permanent taste in the coffee.
- Always empty the capsule container daily. Accumulated moisture and coffee grounds can cause heat retention issues around the brew head.
- If the machine fails to reach temperature after a deep descale and cup pre-heating, the thermoblock heating element may have suffered a partial burnout and requires professional replacement.
