Diagnosis
The De'Longhi Magnifica S (ECAM22110SB) is a bean-to-cup machine, meaning its primary operation relies on the integrated conical burr grinder to process whole beans into a puck. However, the internal brewing unit (infuser) is designed to accept a pre-compressed puck of coffee regardless of whether it was ground internally or added manually. The machine features a dedicated "bypass" chute that allows pre-ground coffee to enter the brewing chamber, bypassing the grinding mechanism entirely. The most common failure point when using pre-ground coffee is "overfilling" the bypass chute or using a grind size that is too fine (such as espresso powder), which can cause the infuser to jam or the machine to trigger a "general alarm" error. To confirm your machine is ready for pre-ground coffee, ensure the bean hopper is empty or the machine is set to the pre-ground mode; otherwise, the machine will attempt to grind beans and add them to your pre-ground coffee, resulting in an over-extracted, bitter, and potentially overflowing brew group.
How to Fix It
To correctly use pre-ground coffee without damaging the internal brewing mechanism, follow these precise steps:
- Locate the small, hinged lid on the top of the machine, situated behind the main bean hopper. This is the pre-ground coffee bypass chute.
- Ensure the machine is powered on and has completed its initial rinse cycle.
- Press the "Aroma" dial or the specific pre-ground coffee button (indicated by a scoop icon) to notify the machine that it should not activate the grinder for this cycle.
- Lift the bypass lid and use the provided measuring scoop to add exactly one level scoop of pre-ground coffee. Do not heap the scoop; adding more than 7-10 grams of coffee will cause the powder to back up into the chute, leading to clogging.
- Close the lid firmly. Do not stir or push the coffee down into the chute with your finger, as this can compact the powder and prevent the infuser from lifting.
- Select your desired beverage (1 cup or 2 cups) and press the start button. The machine will now engage the infuser, lift the pre-ground coffee into the brewing chamber, and execute the extraction.
- After the cycle, open the bypass lid and use a small brush or a dry cloth to remove any stray grains of coffee that may have remained in the chute to prevent mold or blockage.
If That Didn't Work
- Coffee is not flowing (Choked Machine): If the water cannot pass through the coffee, your pre-ground coffee is likely ground too fine (e.g., "Turkish" or "Fine Espresso" powder). The Magnifica S requires a medium-fine grind. If the machine stalls, turn it off, remove the brew group (infuser), and manually clear the compacted puck from the chamber.
- Machine still tries to grind beans: This happens if the "Pre-ground" button was not pressed before the brew cycle. If the grinder runs while you have pre-ground coffee in the chute, the machine will double-dose the coffee. You must clear the brew group and the bypass chute completely before attempting a new cycle.
- Coffee is too weak: Pre-ground coffee often lacks the freshness and oil content of freshly ground beans. To compensate, ensure you are using a high-quality espresso roast. If the taste is thin, try increasing the coffee strength via the aroma dial, though this only affects the grinder; for pre-ground, you must manually ensure the scoop is perfectly level.
- Powder is leaking from the top: This is a sign of overfilling. If you see powder escaping the bypass chute, use a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment to suck the excess powder out of the chute before running another cycle.
Heads Up
- Avoid Instant Coffee: Never put instant coffee crystals into the bypass chute. They will dissolve and create a sticky residue that will permanently seize the brewing unit and void your warranty.
- Grind Consistency: Use "Espresso" or "Moka Pot" grind settings. Avoid "Fine" or "Powder" settings, as these will clog the internal filter screen of the ECAM22110SB.
- Cleaning Frequency: When using pre-ground coffee, the bypass chute can accumulate moisture and oils faster than the bean hopper. Wipe the interior of the chute every 10-15 uses to prevent clogs.
- Infuser Maintenance: Remember to remove the brew group weekly and rinse it under warm water. Pre-ground coffee can sometimes leave more residue in the infuser than whole beans.
