Diagnosis

Watery, thin espresso from your De'Longhi Magnifica S ECAM22110SB is almost always caused by under-extraction. This means the water is passing through the coffee puck too quickly, failing to pull out the rich oils and solids that create body and crema. The primary culprit is a grind setting that is too coarse. Secondary causes include stale or oily beans, or a clogged brew unit that prevents proper pressure buildup.

How to Fix It

First, adjust the internal ceramic grinder to a finer setting.

1. With the machine on and beans in the hopper, press the coffee button to start the grinder.
2. While it is running, turn the black grinding adjustment dial (located inside the bean hopper) one click anti-clockwise (towards a finer grind).
3. Discard the ground coffee from the chute. Make two full espresso cycles (without drinking them). The adjustment only takes full effect after the grinder has run through its existing coarse grounds.
4. After two cycles, pull a test shot. If it's still weak, repeat the process: run grinder, adjust one click finer, purge two cycles, test. Go one click at a time until the espresso flows as a thick, honey-like stream with rich crema.

If That Didn't Work

Your beans or machine maintenance are likely at fault.

• Test with Pre-Ground: Use the manual brew function. Place one level scoop of fresh, finely pre-ground espresso into the bypass doser (the compartment in the bean hopper marked for pre-ground). If this produces a good shot, your whole beans are stale, oily, or incompatible.
• Bean Quality: Use only fresh, dry, dark roast espresso beans. Oily or stale beans will not create proper resistance.
• Deep Clean: A clogged infuser (brew unit) or coffee spouts can destroy pressure. Remove and rinse the brew unit under warm water daily. Perform a full descaling and lubricate the brew unit as per your machine's maintenance schedule.

Heads Up

Do not adjust the grind dial more than one or two clicks at a time, as going too fine can clog the machine and cause it to output no coffee. Always let the grinder run when making adjustments to prevent damaging the burrs.
