getting a really bad musty smell from my front load washer, even right after running a clean cycle.

— asked by Alex

Quick answer: Mold and mildew buildup in the rubber door gasket, detergent dispenser, and internal drain system. Using too much detergent or liquid fabric softener accelerates this.

Diagnosis

Mold and mildew buildup in the rubber door gasket, detergent dispenser, and internal drain system. Using too much detergent or liquid fabric softener accelerates this.

How to Fix It

1. Wipe the entire rubber gasket, especially the inner folds, with a 10% bleach solution. Dry thoroughly. 2. Remove the detergent dispenser tray and clean it in warm water. 3. Run the Tub Clean cycle with hot water and either a washing machine cleaner or two cups of bleach. 4. After every wash, leave the door and detergent tray slightly ajar to air dry.

If That Didn't Work

Debris trapped in the drain pump filter can cause stagnant water smells. Clean the filter as per the 5E error code procedure.

Heads Up

Always use High Efficiency (HE) detergent and never exceed the line 1 recommendation. Excess soap creates residue that feeds mold.
