Diagnosis
Baked-on grease and food spatter on the exposed heating element is a common issue with basket-style air fryers like the Ninja AF101. This residue can smoke during preheating and affect cooking performance.
How to Fix It
To safely clean the Ninja AF101's heating element, follow these steps:
- Unplug the air fryer and let it cool to room temperature. Never attempt to clean it while it is warm or plugged in.
- Using the included cleaning brush, gently but firmly scrub the coiled heating element. Work the bristles between the coils to dislodge loose and dried-on particles.
- Hold the main unit upside down over a trash can to let the dislodged debris fall out. You can use a can of compressed air (held upright) to blow out any remaining dust.
- Dampen a soft cloth with water and wring it out thoroughly. Wipe the exterior of the main unit and the control panel. Never pour or spray water, cleaners, or steam directly into the unit.
If That Didn't Work
For stubborn, carbonized grease that the brush won't remove, you can try a slightly dampened melamine foam pad (e.g., a generic "magic eraser"). Gently rub the affected area of the coil, taking care not to bend it. Do not use any abrasive cleaners, steel wool, scouring pads, or metal brushes, as these can damage the heating element's protective coating. If residue remains, it is best left alone, as it will often burn off during a high-heat, empty cycle (run for 5-10 minutes after cleaning).
Heads Up
The main housing, which contains the heating element and fan, must never be submerged in water or placed in a dishwasher. Only the ceramic-coated basket, crisper plate, and any removable accessories are dishwasher safe. Always ensure the main unit is completely dry before plugging it back in.
