Diagnosis
The rubber sealing ring, or gasket, has absorbed food odors and oils because it's porous and was likely left dirty or sealed in the cooker after use. This is a common issue but can lead to flavor transfer and, if neglected, potential sealing failure.
How to Fix It
First, remove the ring from the lid's groove. Hand wash it thoroughly in hot, soapy water using a soft brush or cloth to scrub all surfaces, paying special attention to the inner ridges. Rinse completely. To deodorize, soak the ring for 15-20 minutes in a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts warm water, or in a mixture of warm water and baking soda. Rinse again. The most critical step is to let it air dry completely, away from direct heat, before placing it back into the lid. Store the lid upside down or with the ring removed to allow for air circulation.
If That Didn't Work
For persistent smells, try soaking the ring overnight in the vinegar solution. You can also gently boil the ring in a pot of plain water for 5-10 minutes, then let it air dry. If the odor remains or the ring appears cracked, hardened, or misshapen, it has degraded and must be replaced with a genuine Prestige Popular 5L sealing ring to ensure safety and proper pressure function.
Heads Up
Never clean the sealing ring in a dishwasher, as the heat and detergents will accelerate degradation. Always inspect the ring for damage or food particles before each use to ensure a safe seal.
