Diagnosis
If the safety valve (the small red pin on the lid) pops up before the cooker reaches full pressure, it indicates steam is escaping from the primary sealing path too early. For your Prestige Popular Aluminum model, this is almost always due to one of three issues: a clogged vent pipe preventing the regulator weight from sealing, a compromised or missing rubber sealing ring (gasket), or an improperly locked lid.
How to Fix It
- Clean the Vent Pipe and Regulator: Remove the pressure regulator weight. Look into the small vent pipe (the hole it sits on) on the lid. Use a toothpick or pipe cleaner to clear any trapped food particles. Rinse the weight's hole under warm water.
- Inspect and Replace the Sealing Ring: Remove the silicone sealing ring from the groove inside the lid. Check for cracks, permanent folds, or brittleness. Wash it thoroughly, as grease can prevent a seal. If damaged, replace it with an authentic Prestige 5L ring.
- Ensure Proper Lid Lock: Place the lid on the cooker and turn it clockwise until the arrow on the lid handle aligns directly with the lock symbol on the base handle. You should feel and hear a distinct click when fully locked.
If That Didn't Work
If the valve still pops prematurely, the safety valve itself may be faulty. While rare, the spring inside can weaken. Do not attempt to repair it. Contact Prestige customer service for a replacement safety valve assembly. Also, verify you are using the correct amount of liquid (minimum 1.5 cups for this 5L model) and that the cooker isn't overfilled beyond the two-thirds max line.
Heads Up
Never force the safety valve down or operate the cooker if the valve pops without pressure. Always ensure the sealing ring is correctly seated in its groove before locking the lid, and replace the ring every 12-18 months with regular use.
