Diagnosis
A hissing noise from the side of your Prestige Popular Aluminum Pressure Cooker indicates steam is escaping from the lid seal, not through the correct top vent. This is not normal during proper pressure buildup and cooking. The primary causes are an improperly positioned or damaged rubber sealing gasket, or the pressure regulator weight not being correctly placed on the vent pipe.
How to Fix It
- Immediately turn off the heat and let the cooker depressurize naturally. Do not force-cool it.
- Once safe to open, inspect the rubber sealing ring. Remove it, clean its groove and the ring itself. Ensure it is soft, pliable, and free of cracks, food debris, or permanent deformities. Re-seat it perfectly in its groove.
- Check the pressure regulator weight. For the 5L model, it's typically a single weight. Ensure the vent pipe (the small tube on the lid) is clear and that the weight sits flat and centered on it.
- Before next use, perform a leak test without food: add 2-3 cups of water, lock the lid, and heat on medium. As pressure builds, you should see steam only from the regulator weight, creating a gentle, steady "jiggle" or hiss from the top. No steam should escape from the lid's perimeter.
If That Didn't Work
If the hiss persists after reseating the ring and regulator, the sealing ring itself is likely hardened, cracked, or stretched and must be replaced with a genuine Prestige spare part. Also, inspect the lid and cooker rim for any dents, warping, or food particles that could prevent a flush seal. Clean all contact surfaces thoroughly.

Never attempt to modify the lid, regulator, or gasket. A constant hiss from the side means the cooker is not reaching or maintaining its designed pressure, which affects cooking safety and results. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for minimum liquid levels and maximum fill lines.
