This happens because different foods (e.g., chicken thighs in Zone 1 and french fries in Zone 2) require vastly different cooking durations and temperature settings to reach the ideal internal temperature and crispness. To confirm the feature is functioning, you must observe the display panels for both zones. When Smart Finish is successfully engaged, the machine calculates the time difference between the two zones and automatically delays the start of the shorter cycle. If you simply press "Start" on both zones independently, the foods will finish at different times, which indicates the Smart Finish logic was not activated. The system requires a specific sequence of inputs to synchronize the timers based on the longest cooking duration selected.
How to Fix It
To correctly synchronize your meal using the Smart Finish feature, follow these precise operational steps:
- Prepare Zone 1: Place your first food item in the left basket. Select your desired function (e.g., Air Fry, Roast, or Bake), set the temperature (e.g., 400°F), and adjust the timer to the required duration (e.g., 20 minutes). Do not press the Start button yet.
- Prepare Zone 2: Place your second food item in the right basket. Select the function, temperature, and time for this specific food (e.g., Air Fry at 400°F for 12 minutes). Again, do not press Start.
- Activate Smart Finish: Locate the "Smart Finish" button situated between the two control panels. Press this button once. You will notice the display update to indicate that the zones are now synchronized.
- Initiate Cooking: Press the "Start" button. The Ninja Foodi will now hold the shorter cycle (Zone 2) in a paused state while Zone 1 begins cooking.
- Monitor the Countdown: The timer for Zone 1 will count down normally. Zone 2 will remain at its set time until the remaining time in Zone 1 matches the required time for Zone 2, at which point the second basket will automatically begin heating.
If That Didn't Work
- Reset the Control Board: If the Smart Finish button is unresponsive or the timers are not syncing, perform a hard power cycle. Unplug the unit from the wall outlet for a full 60 seconds to clear the volatile memory of the control board, then plug it back in and attempt the sequence again.
- Check for Conflicting Settings: Ensure you haven't accidentally pressed "Start" on either zone before hitting Smart Finish. Once a zone has begun its countdown, the Smart Finish logic cannot retrospectively synchronize the timers. You must cancel both zones and start the process from step one.
- Verify Basket Seating: Ensure both baskets are fully pushed into the housing. If the DZ201 detects that a basket is not properly seated, it may throw a generic error or refuse to engage the dual-zone logic, preventing the Smart Finish synchronization from triggering.
- Test with Identical Times: To rule out a hardware failure of the Smart Finish button, set both zones to the exact same time and temperature. Press Smart Finish and then Start. If both start simultaneously and count down together, the feature is working, and previous issues were likely due to incorrect input sequencing.

- Avoid Overcrowding: Smart Finish ensures timing is synced, but it cannot compensate for overcrowding. If you pack the baskets too tightly, the food will steam rather than fry, regardless of the timer settings.
- Preheating Note: The DZ201 does not have a dedicated preheat button for Smart Finish; the unit will heat up as the timers begin. For the best results, add 2-3 minutes to your total cook time to account for the ramp-up period.
- Cleaning the Heating Elements: Every 10-15 uses, wipe the heating elements at the top of each zone with a damp cloth (while unplugged and cool) to prevent carbon buildup, which can lead to uneven cooking and "cold spots" despite perfect timing.
- Basket Maintenance: Only use silicone or wooden tongs to flip food. Using metal utensils will scratch the non-stick ceramic coating of the DZ201 baskets, leading to food sticking and uneven heat distribution.
