Diagnosis

This issue is caused by "over-dosing," where the volume of coffee grounds exceeds the physical capacity of the pressurized filter basket. When you fill the basket too high, the coffee creates a physical barrier between the basket rim and the group head gasket. Because the De'Longhi Stilosa EC260BK uses a pressurized system, the tolerances are extremely tight; if the grounds are sitting even 1mm above the rim, the portafilter cannot seat deeply enough to engage the locking lugs. When you attempt to force the handle toward the 6 o'clock position, you are actually compressing the coffee puck against the shower screen before the portafilter is locked. This creates a "spring" effect that pushes the handle back out. The "grinds everywhere" symptom occurs because the seal is never formed; when the pump engages, the water finds the path of least resistance, which is the gap between the basket and the gasket, resulting in a violent spray of water and coffee grounds exiting the sides of the portafilter.

How to Fix It

To resolve this, you must calibrate your dose to ensure there is a small gap (headspace) between the top of the puck and the shower screen.

1. Remove the portafilter and empty the basket completely. Wipe the rim of the basket with a damp cloth to ensure no stray grounds are clinging to the outer edge.

6. Apply firm, steady pressure and rotate the handle clockwise toward the 6 o'clock position. The handle should move smoothly past the 4 o'clock mark and lock firmly into place without the coffee puck "pushing back."

If That Didn't Work

• Check for "Tamp-Hump": If you are tamping the coffee into a dome shape rather than a flat surface, the center of the puck will hit the shower screen first. Use the flat end of your tamper to ensure the puck is perfectly level across the entire diameter of the basket.
• Inspect the Group Head Gasket: Look inside the group head for old, compacted coffee grounds that may have hardened on the rubber gasket. Use a damp cloth or a toothpick to clear the rubber ring. This pressure can actually push the portafilter handle back toward the 4 o'clock position during the brew cycle. Try a slightly coarser grind to allow water to flow through the puck more easily.
• Verify Basket Seating: Ensure the filter basket is snapped fully into the portafilter handle. If the basket is slightly tilted or not fully seated in the handle, the rim will be uneven, preventing a flush fit with the machine's group head.

• Avoid Over-Tamping: The EC260BK pump is not designed for professional-grade 30lb tamps. Over-tamping often leads to the "locking" struggle and can cause the machine to leak from the group head.
• Purge the System: Always run a "blank shot" (water only, no coffee) for 5 seconds before inserting the portafilter to clear any remaining grounds from the shower screen.
• Basket Maintenance: Only use the baskets provided with the Stilosa. Third-party non-pressurized baskets often have different rim diameters that will not lock correctly in this specific model.
• Cleaning Cycle: Every 30 days, run a cleaning cycle with a dedicated espresso machine detergent to prevent oil buildup on the gasket, which can make the portafilter feel "sticky" or difficult to lock.
