Diagnosis
This behavior is a textbook case of an airlock (vapor lock) within the ULKA vibration pump system of the EC260BK. When a machine is brand new or has sat idle, air pockets become trapped in the internal tubing between the water reservoir and the brew head. Because air is compressible and water is not, the pump cannot generate the necessary 15 bars of pressure to push the air bubble through the narrow valves, resulting in a rhythmic "clicking" or "stuttering" sound rather than a steady hum. The "barely dripping" effect occurs because the pump is oscillating rapidly but failing to create a vacuum strong enough to pull water from the tank. You can confirm this by listening to the pump: a primed pump has a consistent, low-frequency drone, whereas an airlocked pump sounds metallic, erratic, and significantly louder. If you see tiny bubbles in the drip tray or the steam wand, it confirms that air is fighting its way out of the system.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must force the pump to prime by removing all resistance and utilizing the higher-flow path of the steam wand. Follow these exact steps:
- Fill the water reservoir to the "MAX" line with filtered water and ensure it is seated firmly into the base; a loose tank prevents the intake valve from sealing.
- Remove the portafilter (the handle) and the coffee grounds entirely. The brew head must be completely open.
- Power on the machine and wait approximately 40 seconds for the boiler to reach operating temperature.
- Turn the dial to the **Steam/Hot Water** position. This opens the internal bypass valve, which offers the path of least resistance for trapped air to escape.
- While the dial is set to steam, press the brew button. You will hear the pump clicking; let it run for 15-30 seconds.
- Slowly rotate the dial back to the **Coffee/Brew** position while the pump is still running.
- Once a steady stream of water begins flowing from the brew head, let it run for 10 seconds to flush any remaining air bubbles, then turn the machine off.
If That Didn't Work
- Manual Tank Priming: While the pump is running and clicking, gently lift the water reservoir up and down (about 1 inch) several times. This creates a momentary pressure fluctuation in the intake valve that can "shove" the air bubble past the pump's internal check valve.
- Steam Wand Forced Purge: Place a large cup under the steam wand (pannarello). Turn the dial to steam and hold the brew button. If water doesn't come out of the wand, use a thin cocktail stirrer or a paperclip to gently clear the tiny hole at the tip of the wand; a blockage here can prevent the air from venting, keeping the system locked.
- The "Warm Water" Method: Empty the tank and refill it with warm (not boiling) distilled water. Warm water has lower viscosity and can sometimes move through the pump's internal seals more easily than cold water, helping to break the airlock.
- Check the Intake Filter: Inspect the small plastic filter at the bottom of the water tank. If there is a piece of packaging material or a large air bubble trapped right at the intake seal, the pump will struggle to grab water. Ensure the rubber gasket at the bottom of the tank is lubricated and seated flat.
Heads Up
- Avoid letting the water reservoir run completely dry during use. If the pump sucks in air while the machine is hot, it can cause a "dry fire" scenario that makes airlocks much harder to clear.
- Use filtered water to prevent calcium buildup in the narrow internal capillary tubes, which can mimic the symptoms of an airlock by restricting flow.
- If you hear a very loud, sharp metallic clanging rather than a click, stop the machine immediately; this could indicate a faulty pump capacitor rather than a simple airlock.
- Perform a full descale every 2-3 months using a dedicated De'Longhi solution to ensure the solenoid valves open and close fully.
