When the power light is illuminated but the brew or steam buttons fail to trigger the pump, the machine is typically stuck in a "thermal wait state" or is experiencing an air lock. In a thermal wait state, the internal thermostat has not yet reached the minimum temperature required to allow water flow; the machine prevents the pump from running to avoid pumping cold water through the group head, which would result in a sour, under-extracted shot. Alternatively, this is often caused by a "dry start" or an air bubble trapped in the pump head (cavitation). If the water tank was ever allowed to run completely dry, air enters the pump's internal valves. Because air is compressible and water is not, the pump may be spinning internally without creating enough pressure to move the water, or the safety circuit is preventing the pump from engaging to protect the motor from burning out. You can confirm this by listening closely to the machine; if you hear a very faint hum but no water movement, it is an air lock. If there is absolute silence, it is likely a thermal or electrical trigger issue.

How to Fix It

To resolve this, you must force the machine to prime and ensure the thermal circuit is fully closed. Follow these exact steps:

1. Fill the water tank to the "MAX" line using filtered water. Ensure the tank is seated firmly; push down on the top of the tank until you feel it lock into the base valve.
2. Turn the power switch to the ON position. Do not press any brew buttons yet. Wait exactly 60 to 90 seconds. Even if the light looks steady, the internal thermoblock needs a full cycle to reach operating temperature.
3. Turn the Steam Dial (the knob on the side) to the "Steam" position. This opens the bypass valve and is the fastest way to clear air locks.
4. Press the Steam button. If the pump engages and water/steam begins to exit the wand, let it run for 10 seconds to purge all air from the boiler.
5. Turn the Steam Dial back to the "Coffee" position.
6. Press the 1-cup brew button. If the pump starts, the air lock is cleared and the machine is now primed.

If That Didn't Work

• Manual Prime via the Steam Wand: If the brew button is unresponsive, the blockage is often at the group head. With the machine on, open the steam valve fully and carefully pour a small amount of warm water directly into the top of the water tank's intake valve (where it connects to the machine) while the pump is attempting to run. This creates a "siphon effect" that can push the air bubble through the system.
• Reset the Thermal Fuse: Unplug the machine from the wall outlet for at least 30 minutes. This allows the capacitors on the control board to discharge fully and resets the thermal trip sensor. Plug it back in and wait for the heating element to stabilize before pressing any buttons.

If there is a piece of debris or a mineral buildup on the valve seat, the machine will not "sense" the water, and the pump will not engage. • Deep Descale: If the machine is humming but nothing is coming out, calcium carbonate buildup may be blocking the narrow thermoblock channels. Use a liquid descaler specifically formulated for De'Longhi machines. Run the descaler through the steam wand first, as this is the widest path, then through the group head.
