Diagnosis
Your Epson WF-2860 is currently configured for a standard analog phone line (PSTN). Because your office uses a PBX (Private Branch Exchange) system, the printer cannot establish an external connection without first "requesting" an outside line via the digit 9. Until the printer is told to prepend this digit to every outgoing call, the fax will fail to connect and eventually time out.
How to Fix It
You need to change the line type and program the specific access code into the printer's internal fax memory. Follow these steps on the printer's control panel:
- Press the Home button to return to the main screen.
- Navigate to Settings > General Settings > Fax Settings.
- Select Basic Settings and then locate Line Type.
- Change the selection from "Standard" or "PSTN" to PBX.
- Ensure the switch for this setting is toggled to Use to activate the PBX mode.
- Select Access Code from the menu.
- Using the on-screen numeric keypad, enter the digit 9 (or whatever sequence your office requires to get an outside line).
- Select OK to save the configuration.
If That Didn't Work
If the fax still fails, you may need to adjust the Dial Tone Detection. In some PBX systems, the printer doesn't recognize the "beep" as a standard dial tone. Go to Fax Settings > Basic Settings > Dial Tone Detection and change it from "Automatic" to Off. This forces the printer to dial the number immediately without waiting for a confirmation tone.
Heads Up
If your office requires a pause (a few seconds of silence) after dialing 9 before the fax number is entered, you may need to contact your IT department to see if a "Pause" command can be added to the access code string, as some PBX systems are slower to route calls than others.
