The Roborock Q7 Max Plus relies on a PreciSense LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system, which functions by spinning a laser emitter and receiver at high speeds to map the distance to surrounding walls and furniture. When the map appears "jagged" or entire rooms are skipped, it is almost always a failure of the laser to receive a consistent return signal. This is known as "sensor ghosting" or "signal absorption." This happens most frequently due to three specific environmental triggers: infrared interference from direct sunlight, signal absorption by matte-black surfaces (which "swallow" the laser), or signal deflection from floor-to-ceiling mirrors and glass. If the laser hits a mirror, it doesn't see a wall; it sees a "phantom room" that extends beyond the actual wall, causing the internal SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) algorithm to crash or shift the map coordinates, resulting in the jagged lines and missed zones you are seeing.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to recalibrate the mapping environment and clear the sensor path:
- Physical Sensor Decontamination: Power down the vacuum. Use a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth or a can of compressed air to clean the LiDAR turret (the circular dome on top). Ensure there are no hair wraps or dust clumps obstructing the rotating lens.
- Environmental Shielding: Close all curtains or blinds to eliminate direct sunlight hitting the floor or the robot. High-intensity IR light from the sun can "blind" the LiDAR sensor, causing it to lose its position in real-time.
- Mirror and Glass Masking: Identify any floor-to-ceiling mirrors or glass doors. Use painters tape or a temporary physical barrier (like a cardboard box) to cover the bottom 4-6 inches of the mirror. This forces the LiDAR to recognize the boundary as a solid wall rather than a reflective void.
- Map Reset and Fresh Scan: Open the Roborock App. Go to Settings > Map Management. Delete the current corrupted map entirely. This is critical; if you try to "fix" a jagged map, the robot will continue to reference the old, incorrect coordinates.
- Controlled First Run: Clear all small obstacles, loose charging cables, and lightweight rugs from the floor. Start a "Full Clean" from the dock. Do not intervene or pick up the robot during this process, as manually moving the unit disrupts the coordinate system and creates the jagged map effect.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for LiDAR Mechanical Failure: Gently flick the LiDAR turret with your finger to ensure it spins freely. If you hear a grinding noise or the turret doesn't rotate when the robot starts, the internal motor or belt has failed. This requires a replacement of the LiDAR module (Part No. Q7-LIDAR-ASSY).
- Update Firmware via App: Navigate to Settings > Firmware Update. Ensure you are on the latest version. Roborock frequently releases SLAM algorithm updates that improve how the Q7 Max Plus handles reflective surfaces and "dark room" navigation.
- Reset the Wi-Fi and System: Perform a hard factory reset by holding the Reset button near the Wi-Fi indicator light for 5 seconds. Re-pair the device to your network. This clears the cache and removes any corrupted mapping data stored in the local memory.
- Adjust Room Lighting: While LiDAR doesn't need light to see, extremely dark rooms with matte-black carpets can cause the robot to "get lost" because the laser signal is absorbed. Try adding a small nightlight or leaving a door ajar to provide a reference point for the robot.

- Avoid "Lifting" the Robot: Never pick up the robot and move it to another room during a cleaning cycle. This causes a "Relocalization Error," which is the primary cause of jagged, shifted maps.
- Cable Management: Ensure cables are tucked away. If the robot catches a cable, it may rotate in place, tricking the LiDAR into thinking the room has rotated, which creates "ghost walls" on your map.
- Cliff Sensor Maintenance: Wipe the four cliff sensors on the bottom of the unit. If these are dirty, the robot may perceive a "drop-off" where none exists, causing it to skip entire sections of a room.
- Virtual Walls: Once your map is clean, use the "No-Go Zone" feature in the app to block off the base of mirrors or highly reflective chrome furniture legs to prevent future mapping drifts.
