Diagnosis
The Roborock Q7 Max Plus utilizes a series of infrared (IR) cliff sensors located along the bottom perimeter of the chassis. These sensors function by emitting an IR beam and measuring the time it takes for that beam to bounce back to the receiver. When the robot encounters a void—such as a flight of stairs—the beam doesn't return, triggering an immediate stop and a "cliff detected" error to prevent the unit from falling. The issue occurs because dark-colored fabrics, specifically deep blacks, charcoals, or navy blues, absorb IR light rather than reflecting it. To the Q7 Max Plus, a dark area rug looks identical to a bottomless pit because the sensor receives no return signal. This results in the robot freezing in place, spinning, or retreating from the rug, often leaving a large "dead zone" in your cleaning map. You can confirm this by placing the robot on the rug and observing if it immediately triggers a "Cliff detected" voice prompt or app notification.
How to Fix It
Because the Q7 Max Plus is designed for safety, there is no software toggle to simply "turn off" the cliff sensors globally (as this would risk the robot falling down stairs). The fix requires a combination of physical modification and software zoning:
- Clean the Sensors: Before applying modifications, use a dry microfiber cloth or a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol to clean the six cliff sensor windows on the underside. Dust buildup can exacerbate the "dark rug" effect.
- The "White-Out" Method: For users without stairs in their home, the most effective fix is to physically block the sensors. Use small pieces of white electrical tape or specialized "cliff sensor covers" (opaque white vinyl). Carefully apply a small square of white tape over each of the IR emitter/receiver windows. This tricks the sensor into thinking it is always seeing a reflective surface, allowing it to glide over dark rugs.
- Create a No-Go Zone: If you have stairs and cannot tape the sensors, open the Roborock App. Navigate to Settings > Map Management > Edit Map. Select No-Go Zone and draw a red box precisely over the dark rug area. This prevents the robot from attempting to enter the zone and getting stuck.
- Adjust Carpet Boost: If the robot can enter the rug but struggles to leave, go to Settings > Carpet Cleaning Settings and set it to Carpet Boost+. This increases suction and wheel torque, which can sometimes help the robot "muscle through" the friction of a heavy rug pile.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Rug Pile Height: If your rug is a high-pile shag (over 1 inch), the Q7 Max Plus may be getting physically wedged. The cliff sensors may be triggered not by color, but by the fabric pressing up against the sensor housing. Try trimming the rug edges or using a low-profile rug pad to flatten the surface.
- Lighting Conditions: Ensure the room is well-lit. While cliff sensors use their own IR light, extreme external glare from floor-to-ceiling windows can sometimes interfere with the sensor's ability to distinguish between a dark rug and a void. Close the blinds during the first few mapping runs.
- Firmware Update: Check the app for a pending firmware update. Roborock occasionally releases "sensor sensitivity" patches that improve the algorithm for distinguishing between dark surfaces and actual drops.
- Hardware Reset: If the robot continues to report "Cliff detected" even on light surfaces, perform a hard reset by holding the Reset button (near the Wi-Fi indicator) with a pin for 5 seconds to clear the sensor cache.
Heads Up
- WARNING: If you use the white tape method to disable cliff sensors, the robot WILL fall down stairs. Do not use this method in multi-level homes.
- Maintenance: Check your sensor tape every 30 days. If the tape peels or becomes covered in grime, the robot may intermittently trigger cliff errors again.
- Tangle Prevention: Dark rugs often have longer fibers that wrap around the Q7 Max Plus's all-rubber main brush. Check the brush roll weekly for hair and thread buildup to ensure the robot maintains enough traction to climb onto the rug.
