Diagnosis
The iRobot Roomba j7+ is encountering a "physical wedge" scenario. This typically occurs when the chassis height of the vacuum (approximately 3.6 inches) is nearly identical to the clearance of your kitchen cabinet toe kicks. As the robot attempts to clean the edge, the front bumper makes contact, but the top of the robot's shell slides underneath the cabinet overhang. Once the robot moves forward a few inches, the friction between the top of the unit and the bottom of the cabinet creates a mechanical lock, preventing the robot from reversing. This is often exacerbated by "cliff sensor" confusion. The dark shadows cast under kitchen cabinets are frequently misread by the infrared cliff sensors as a drop-off. When the robot detects this "cliff" while already partially wedged, it triggers the 'please move roomba to a new location' error because it cannot move forward (due to the cliff signal) and cannot move backward (due to the physical wedge). You can confirm this by checking if the robot is consistently stuck in the same 2-3 inch strip of flooring directly beneath the cabinet edge.
How to Fix It
The most effective way to resolve this without modifying your cabinetry is by utilizing the Precision Mapping features in the iRobot Home App to create a "Keep Out Zone."
- Open the iRobot Home App and select your Roomba j7+ from the device list.
- Navigate to the Map tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Select Keep Out Zones from the menu options.
- Tap the + icon to create a new zone.
- Drag the boundaries of the zone to cover the specific area of the kitchen cabinets where the robot gets stuck. Do not draw the line exactly at the cabinet base; instead, extend the zone 4 to 6 inches into the open floor space. This ensures the robot's bumper triggers and turns the unit around before the chassis can slide under the overhang.
- Save the zone and run a "Clean" cycle to verify the robot now avoids the area entirely.
If That Didn't Work
- Physical Bumper Obstructions: Check the front bumper for debris or sticky residue. If the bumper doesn't fully "spring" back into place, the robot may think it is permanently touching an object, causing it to freeze. Clean the bumper gaps with compressed air or a microfiber cloth to ensure the mechanical switches are clicking freely.
- Physical Barrier Installation: If the app-based Keep Out Zone is being ignored (which happens occasionally in high-glare areas), install a physical "bump strip" or a thin piece of clear acrylic trim on the floor directly in front of the toe kick. A strip only 1/4 inch thick is enough to prevent the robot from sliding under the cabinet while still allowing the bumper to trigger a turn.
- Lighting Adjustments: If the robot is stopping due to the "cliff" shadow, increase the ambient light in your kitchen. Open curtains or turn on under-cabinet LED lighting. This reduces the contrast of the shadows, preventing the infrared sensors from falsely identifying the floor as a ledge.
- Reset the IMU: Perform a hard reset by pressing and holding the CLEAN button for 20 seconds until the light ring swirls. This recalibrates the internal Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), which helps the robot better understand its orientation when it feels a physical obstruction.
Heads Up
- Map Integrity: Keep Out Zones only function if you have a "Smart Map" saved. If you delete your map or move furniture significantly, you must redraw your zones or the robot will revert to random navigation and get stuck again.
- Sensor Maintenance: Every 30 days, wipe the bottom-facing cliff sensors with a dry cotton swab. Dust buildup on these sensors can make the robot "hallucinate" cliffs in areas where there are none, leading to more frequent "move robot" errors.
- Avoid Rug Overlaps: Ensure no thin rugs or runners are sliding under the cabinet toe kicks. The j7+ can catch the edge of a rug, which pulls the robot deeper under the cabinet, making the wedge even tighter and harder to extract.
