Diagnosis
The issue is caused by a failure in the mechanical locking mechanism of the multi-surface rubber brush assembly. Specifically, the green end-cap—which acts as the primary retention point—is either not fully seated in the drive gear socket or the internal plastic locking tab has suffered a fatigue fracture. When the brush encounters a high-friction obstacle (like a thick rug edge or a clump of pet hair), the torque overcomes the weakened grip of the end cap, causing the brush to dislodge and drag behind the unit. You can confirm this by removing the brush and inspecting the green plastic caps at both ends. Look for hairline cracks or a "flattened" appearance on the locking lugs. Additionally, check the drive gear inside the chassis for debris; if a small pebble or hairball is lodged in the gear teeth, the brush cannot seat deeply enough to lock, leaving it prone to popping out during a cleaning cycle. This is a common failure point on the j7+ series due to the high torque required for the dual-brush system.
How to Fix It
To resolve the dislodging issue, follow these precise steps to ensure a secure lock:
- Power down the Roomba j7+ by pressing and holding the Clean button for 10 seconds until the light ring turns off.
- Flip the robot over and press the two release tabs on the brush module to pop the cover open.
- Lift the rubber brushes out of the chassis. Carefully pull the green end caps off the brushes by pulling them straight out (they are designed to be removable for cleaning).
- Inspect the drive gear sockets inside the robot. Use a toothpick or compressed air to clear any debris from the hexagonal sockets where the green caps seat.
- Inspect the green end caps for any signs of warping. If the plastic looks stressed or white, replace the brush assembly entirely.
- Slide the rubber brushes back into the chassis. Ensure the brushes are perfectly parallel to the frame.
- Press the green end caps firmly into the sockets. You must apply significant downward pressure until you feel a tactile "snap" and hear a distinct audible click. If the cap feels "spongy," it is not locked.
- Snap the brush module cover back into place and power the unit back on.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Brush Assembly: If the green caps are cracked or the internal spring tension is gone, no amount of pressing will fix it. Purchase a genuine iRobot j7+ Replacement Multi-Surface Brush set. Avoid generic third-party brushes, as the tolerances on the end caps are often off by fractions of a millimeter, leading to the same popping-out issue.
- Check the Brush Module Frame: Inspect the plastic frame that holds the brushes. If the frame is warped or cracked, it may be allowing the brushes to shift laterally, which puts uneven pressure on the end caps and forces them out of the sockets. If the frame is bent, the entire brush module needs replacement.
- Inspect the Drive Motor Gear: In rare cases, the internal drive gear (the metal component the green cap grips) may be stripped or worn down. If you can rotate the gear with your finger without any resistance, the motor or the gear assembly is failing, and the brush will never stay locked.
- Clean the Chassis Underside: Ensure there is no buildup of grime or sticky residue around the edges of the brush module. If the module cover isn't closing 100% flush, it can create a gap that allows the brush to "jump" its track when hitting a transition strip or doorway.

- Always remove the rubber brushes and clean the end caps once every two weeks; hair wrap around the ends puts lateral pressure on the caps, which is the primary cause of them popping out.
- Avoid using the j7+ on extremely high-pile shag carpets if you notice frequent brush dislodgment, as the deep fibers create excessive drag on the brush ends.
- When replacing brushes, ensure you are using the specific j7/s9 series rubber brushes; using brushes from older 600 or 800 series models will not lock and can damage the drive motors.
- Check the "Maintenance" section of the iRobot Home App; if the robot detects a "Brush Obstruction" error frequently, it is a sign the end caps are slipping even if they haven't fully fallen out yet.
