Diagnosis
The "Please clean Roomba's bin" error on the j7+ is typically triggered by an infrared (IR) beam interruption. Inside the robot's chassis, there is a small emitter and receiver pair that monitors the fill level of the dustbin. When debris, a clump of pet hair, or a thick layer of fine dust blocks this beam, the robot assumes the bin is full and halts operation to prevent motor strain or overflow. This issue often occurs even when the bin appears visually empty because microscopic dust particles can coat the sensor lens, or a small piece of debris has become lodged in the narrow gap between the bin and the sensor housing. If the bin is not seated perfectly flush against the chassis, the IR beam may refract or fail to reach the receiver, triggering a false "full" reading. You can confirm this is a sensor issue if the error persists immediately after a self-empty cycle at the Clean Base.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a deep clean of the sensor interface and ensure a mechanical seal. Follow these steps precisely:
- Power down the robot by pressing and holding the Clean button until the lights turn off.
- Press the release button on the back of the j7+ and slide the dustbin completely out of the chassis.
- Empty the bin into a trash can and tap the bin against a hard surface to dislodge any hidden debris trapped in the internal filters.
- Inspect the bin cavity inside the robot. Look for the small, clear plastic windows (the sensors). Use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust from these openings.
- Take a dry, lint-free cotton swab and gently wipe the sensor windows inside the robot's body. Do not apply pressure, as these lenses are delicate.
- Check the dustbin's contact points and the rear latch. Ensure no hair is wrapped around the bin's edge, which could prevent it from seating fully.
- Slide the bin back into the robot and press firmly until you hear a distinct "click." If the bin is loose, the sensor will not align.
- Power the robot back on and initiate a "Clean" cycle to test the sensor.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Clean Base Seal: If the robot triggers this error specifically after returning to the base, the issue is likely a blockage in the throat of the Clean Base. Check the cardboard flap inside the base where the bag attaches. If the flap is stuck or misaligned, the vacuum cannot pull debris out of the robot, leaving a "plug" of dirt over the sensor.
- Replace the Bin Filter: A heavily clogged filter can cause air pressure imbalances that push dust back toward the sensor window. Remove the green filter from the bin, shake it out, or replace it with a new OEM filter if it has turned grey/black.
- Hard Reset the Logic Board: Sometimes the error is a software glitch. Press and hold the Clean button for 20 seconds. The light ring will swirl. This clears the temporary cache and forces the sensor to re-calibrate its "empty" baseline.
- Check for Bin Warping: Inspect the plastic edges of the bin for any cracks or warping. If the bin is slightly bowed from a hard impact, it will not maintain the necessary seal against the IR sensors, causing intermittent "bin full" alerts.
Heads Up
- Avoid using isopropyl alcohol or liquid cleaners on the internal sensors; this can strip the protective coating from the IR lens and lead to permanent sensor failure.
- If you have pets that shed heavily, clean the sensor windows with compressed air once every two weeks to prevent "ghost" full-bin errors.
- Ensure the disposable bag in the Clean Base is pushed firmly into the cardboard holder. A loose bag can create a vacuum leak that prevents the robot's bin from being fully evacuated.
- Never attempt to bypass the sensor by taping over it; this can lead to the motor overheating by trying to suck air through a completely blocked filter.
