Diagnosis
This phenomenon is known as "air entrainment." When you install the iSpring RCC7AK-BN, you are introducing a large volume of air into the filter housings and the internal plumbing of the Reverse Osmosis (RO) system. As water begins to fill the membranes and carbon blocks, it doesn't displace the air perfectly; instead, it creates thousands of microscopic air bubbles that remain suspended in the water. This gives the water a milky or "cloudy" appearance, which often looks like a chemical contaminant but is actually just dissolved oxygen and atmospheric air. You can confirm this is air and not a filtration failure by performing a "glass test." Fill a clear glass with the cloudy water and let it sit undisturbed on a counter for 60 to 120 seconds. If the cloudiness clears from the bottom up, it is definitively air bubbles. If the cloudiness remains or settles as sediment at the bottom, you are dealing with carbon fines or a membrane breach. Because the RCC7AK-BN uses high-density carbon blocks, it is also common to see a slight grey tint initially—these are carbon fines that must be flushed out before the water is potable.
How to Fix It
To resolve the cloudiness and ensure the system is properly primed, follow this specific flushing sequence:
- Open the Faucet: Turn the dedicated RO faucet to the full open position. Do not use a half-turn; allow maximum flow to create the pressure needed to push air pockets out.
- Initial Flush: Let the water run continuously for at least 15 to 20 minutes. If you have the system connected to a storage tank, allow the tank to fill and then drain it completely through the faucet.
- The "Purge" Cycle: Close the faucet and allow the storage tank to refill completely. Once the tank is full, open the faucet again and let it run until the flow slows to a trickle. This forces air trapped in the upper portions of the tank and the membrane housing to exit.
- Repeat: Repeat this fill-and-drain cycle three times. This ensures that any air pockets trapped in the "dead legs" of the tubing are fully evacuated.
- Visual Verification: Perform the glass test again. The water should now be crystal clear instantly.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Air Leaks: If the cloudiness persists after three full tank drains, check the push-fit connectors. A tiny leak on the intake side (before the membrane) can act as a vent, sucking air into the line via the Venturi effect. Use a dry paper towel to wipe every connection point; any dampness indicates a leak that needs to be reseated.
- Inspect the Pre-Filters: If the water looks "grey" rather than "bubbly," your carbon blocks may not have been flushed sufficiently. Remove the first two stages and rinse the filters under a separate tap for 30 seconds before reinstalling them to remove loose carbon dust.
- Check Tank Pressure: If the water comes out in "spurts" along with the bubbles, your storage tank may have an incorrect air pre-charge. Use a pressure gauge to ensure the tank is set to 7-10 PSI when empty. If it's too high, it can trap air pockets in the bladder.
- Verify Membrane Seating: Ensure the RO membrane is pushed firmly into the housing. If the O-rings are pinched or not seated deeply, air can bypass the membrane and mix with the permeate stream, causing constant cloudiness.
Heads Up
- Avoid Immediate Consumption: Do not drink the first two full tanks of water. The initial flush is critical for removing preservative chemicals and carbon fines from the new filters.
- TDS Reading: Do not be alarmed if your TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) reading is high for the first 2-3 gallons. This is normal "break-in" behavior for the membrane.
- Leak Detection: Check the area under the sink every 24 hours for the first week. The RCC7AK-BN uses high-pressure seals that can occasionally shift as the system reaches full operating pressure.
- Filter Schedule: Mark your calendar for the pre-filter changes (typically every 6 months) to prevent sediment buildup from clogging the membrane, which can cause pressure drops and air pockets.
