Diagnosis
This is not normal operation. While Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems naturally produce "brine" (waste water) during the filtration process, the flow should stop completely once the storage tank reaches its maximum capacity and the Automatic Shut-Off Valve (ASOV) triggers. If water is flowing into the drain line nonstop for hours, your system is failing to reach the "cut-off" pressure threshold required to seal the ASOV. The root cause is typically a pressure imbalance. The ASOV relies on a specific pressure differential between the incoming feed water and the pressure inside the storage tank. If your incoming line pressure is too low (below 40-45 PSI), the membrane cannot push enough water into the tank to trigger the shut-off. Alternatively, if the ASOV diaphragm has failed or the membrane is severely fouled, the system will stay in a constant state of "production," wasting gallons of water and potentially flooding your drain if the tubing is improperly routed. You can confirm this by closing the tank valve; if the drain continues to run indefinitely even while the tank is full, the ASOV is likely defective or the membrane is bypassed.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to isolate the failure and restore the shut-off function:
- Isolate the Tank: Locate the blue plastic valve on top of the storage tank and turn it 90 degrees to the "Closed" position. This removes the tank's back-pressure from the equation.
- Verify Feed Pressure: Use a pressure gauge on your incoming cold water line. The iSpring RCC7AK-BN requires a minimum of 45 PSI to function efficiently. If your gauge reads below 40 PSI, the system will struggle to shut off. In this case, you must install a permeate pump or a booster pump to increase the pressure hitting the membrane.
- Test the ASOV: With the tank valve closed, open the RO faucet and let water flow for 30 seconds, then close it. Observe the drain line. It should flow for a few minutes and then stop. If it continues to flow for more than 20 minutes with the faucet closed and the tank isolated, the ASOV (the small square plastic valve where four tubes meet) is faulty and needs replacement.
- Check Membrane Seating: Ensure the RO membrane is fully seated in its housing. If the O-rings are pinched or skewed, water will bypass the membrane and flow directly into the drain without building the pressure needed to trip the shut-off valve.
- Reset the System: Open the tank valve and allow the system to fill completely. Wait 2-3 hours. If the drain stops, the issue was simply a depleted tank that needed to reach full pressure to trigger the valve.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the ASOV: If the drain never stops despite adequate incoming pressure, the internal diaphragm of the Automatic Shut-Off Valve has likely ruptured. Purchase a replacement ASOV compatible with 1/4" tubing. Disconnect the four lines, swap the valve, and ensure the "In" and "Out" ports are oriented correctly according to the flow direction arrows on the valve body.
- Check for Air Locks: Air trapped in the membrane housing can prevent the system from reaching cut-off pressure. Close the input valve, open the RO faucet to bleed the lines, then slowly reopen the input valve to force air out of the system.
- Inspect the Check Valve: The one-way check valve (usually a small elbow fitting at the membrane outlet) may be stuck open. If water flows backward from the tank into the membrane, the ASOV will never sense the pressure increase and will allow the drain to run indefinitely. Replace the check valve if you feel water flowing backward through the line.
- Replace the RO Membrane: If the membrane is clogged with scale or sediment, it cannot produce permeate water efficiently. This prevents the tank from filling and the pressure from rising. If your daily water production has dropped significantly, replace the membrane element.

- Pressure Warning: Never install a pressure regulator that drops your input pressure below 40 PSI on the RO line, as this guarantees a "constant drain" scenario.
- Filter Schedule: Change your pre-filters (sediment and carbon) every 6 months. If these clog, the pressure reaching the membrane drops, which can trigger a failure in the shut-off mechanism.
- Tank Pressure: Check the air pressure in the storage tank with a tire gauge. It should be between 5-7 PSI when the tank is empty. If the air bladder is depleted, the system won't build the necessary back-pressure to shut off the drain.
- Leak Detection: Always check the fittings around the ASOV after replacing parts; a tiny pinhole leak here can prevent the system from ever reaching the 60-70 PSI required to stop the waste water flow.
