The primary reason your iSpring RCC7AK-BN tastes identical to your tap water is a "bypass failure," where the water is skipping the Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane entirely. In a properly functioning system, the membrane acts as the critical barrier that strips away 95-99% of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). If the taste hasn't changed, the water is flowing through the system via a path of least resistance that avoids the membrane's microscopic pores. This most commonly occurs because the RO membrane was left in its protective plastic shrink-wrap during installation, or it was not seated deeply enough into the membrane housing to engage the internal O-rings. When the membrane isn't sealed, the water simply flows around the sides of the filter element rather than being forced through it. Another possibility is a cross-connection in the tubing, where the "Product Water" line is accidentally swapped with the "Waste Water" line, or a leak in the membrane housing seal allowing raw water to bleed into the storage tank.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to ensure the membrane is correctly engaged and the flow path is sealed:
- Shut off the water supply: Close the cold water supply valve and close the tank valve (turn 90 degrees) to stop pressure from building.
- Depressurize the system: Open the RO faucet and let all remaining water drain until the flow stops completely.
- Inspect the Membrane Housing: Locate the large horizontal housing (Stage 4). Unscrew the cap at the end of the housing. Pull the blue RO membrane out carefully.
- Verify Packaging: Check if the membrane is still wrapped in clear plastic. If it is, remove the plastic entirely. The membrane must be bare to allow water to permeate the layers.
- Correct Seating: Re-insert the membrane. Push it firmly into the housing until you feel it "bottom out." You should feel a distinct click or a firm stop; if it is loose, the O-rings will not seal, and water will bypass the filtration process.
- Seal and Tighten: Screw the housing cap back on tightly. Hand-tighten first, then give it a quarter-turn with a wrench to ensure a watertight seal against the O-ring.
- Flush the System: Open the supply valve and let the system fill. Open the faucet and let the water run for 10 full minutes to flush out any carbon fines or air pockets before tasting.
If That Didn't Work
- Test with a TDS Meter: Purchase a digital TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter. Measure your tap water, then measure the RO water. If the numbers are nearly identical, you have a mechanical bypass. If the RO water is significantly lower but still tastes "off," your post-carbon polishing filter (the final stage) may be clogged or defective, failing to remove the remaining taste.
- Check Tubing Routing: Trace the 1/4" tubing from the membrane housing. Ensure the "Pure Water" line goes to the storage tank and the "Waste Water" line goes to the drain. If these are swapped, you are essentially drinking concentrated brine or bypassing the membrane.
- Inspect the Check Valve: Locate the small plastic check valve (usually a small elbow fitting) exiting the membrane housing. If this valve is faulty or installed backward, it can allow water to flow backward into the system, contaminating the purified water in the tank with raw tap water.
- Verify Tank Pressure: If the tank pressure is too low (below 7 PSI), the system may struggle to push water through the final stages, leading to a "stagnant" taste that mimics tap water. Use a pressure gauge on the tank's air valve to ensure it is set correctly.

- Initial Flush: Always discard the first two full tanks of water after a new installation. The membranes are preserved with a food-grade solution that can taste bitter or salty if not flushed.
- Leak Check: After reseating the membrane, wipe all connections with a dry paper towel. Even a tiny drip at the membrane housing can signal a bypass that ruins water quality.
- Filter Schedule: Replace the three pre-filters (Sediment and Carbon) every 6 months. If these clog, the RO membrane will not receive enough pressure to function, leading to poor filtration.
- Avoid Kinking: Ensure the tubing is not kinked behind the cabinetry. A kink in the waste line increases backpressure, which can force raw water through the seals of the membrane housing.
