Diagnosis
The De'Longhi Magnifica S ECAM22110SB does not use an electronic optical sensor to detect the presence of the grounds container; instead, it relies on a mechanical micro-switch triggered by a physical plastic lever. When you slide the container into the machine, a protrusion on the back of the tray pushes a small lever inside the chassis, which closes the circuit and tells the motherboard the bin is present. If the light continues to flash after emptying, it means the circuit remains open, either because the lever is stuck, the container isn't seated deeply enough, or the machine's logic hasn't "registered" the reset sequence.
A common cause for this "phantom" warning is the accumulation of compacted, damp coffee pucks at the very bottom of the internal brew group chute. If a puck is stuck halfway, it can prevent the container from sliding back the final 2-3 millimeters required to engage the micro-switch. Additionally, if the machine was turned off or unplugged while the container was removed, the internal memory may hold the "empty" state as a persistent error until a specific power-cycle sequence is performed to clear the cache.
How to Fix It
To resolve this and reset the sensor logic, follow this exact sequence:
- Power down the machine using the main switch and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to discharge the capacitors.
- Slide the grounds container entirely out of the machine. Inspect the rear ledge of the container for any cracks or warping in the plastic that might prevent a flush fit.
- Reach into the cavity where the container sits and feel for the small plastic trigger lever. Gently wiggle it with your finger to ensure it moves freely and isn't jammed by a stray coffee bean or a clump of wet grounds.
- Use a vacuum cleaner or a damp microfiber cloth to clear the bottom of the internal chute. Ensure there is no debris resting on the floor of the machine that would act as a spacer between the tray and the chassis.
- Reinsert the container firmly. You should feel a distinct "thump" as it hits the back wall.
- Plug the machine back in and turn it on. Crucial Step: Do not press any brew buttons immediately. Wait for the machine to complete its initial rinse cycle. If the light is still flashing, slide the container out and back in one more time while the machine is powered ON.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Reset: Turn the machine off and unplug it for at least 10 minutes. This clears the temporary memory of the control board. While unplugged, press and hold the "On" button for 5 seconds to drain any remaining electricity. Plug it back in and see if the sensor resets.
- Clean the Brew Group: Remove the entire infuser (the brew group) from the center of the machine. If the brew group is clogged with old oils or coffee, it can cause the pucks to eject improperly, leading to "half-pucks" that jam the sensor area. Rinse the infuser under warm water and let it air dry before reinserting.
- Check for Container Warping: If you have used the container in a dishwasher at high heat, the plastic may have warped. Place the container on a completely flat surface (like a granite countertop) to see if the bottom is bowed. If it is not flat, it will not push the micro-switch deep enough to trigger the "full" signal.
- Manual Trigger Test: With the container removed and the machine on, use a clean cotton swab to gently press the internal lever. If the light turns off, the switch is working, and the issue is purely the physical fit of your container. If the light stays on even when the switch is manually pressed, the micro-switch has failed and requires a part replacement.
Heads Up
- Emptying Sequence: Always empty the grounds container while the machine is powered ON. If you empty it while the machine is off, the sensor will not register the action, and the light will continue to flash upon startup.
- Avoid Overfilling: Do not wait for the container to be completely overflowing. Compressed pucks can create a "bridge" that prevents the next puck from falling, eventually jamming the mechanism and stressing the sensor lever.
- No Soap in the Bin: When cleaning the grounds container, avoid using harsh dish soaps or abrasive scrubbers that can scratch the plastic, as this can lead to buildup that prevents the tray from sliding smoothly.
- Drip Tray Maintenance: Ensure the drip tray is also clean; if the tray is overflowing with water, it can seep into the sensor housing, causing intermittent electrical shorts and false "empty" warnings.
