my kitchenaid electric range oven won't heat up at all, but the display and lights all work fine.

Quick answer: DIAGNOSIS: The oven's bake element (the big metal coil at the bottom) has almost certainly burned out. It's the most common failure point when you have power but no heat.

DIAGNOSIS: The oven's bake element (the big metal coil at the bottom) has almost certainly burned out. It's the most common failure point when you have power but no heat.

FIX:

  • Unplug the range or turn off the circuit breaker.
  • Open the oven door and remove the oven racks.
  • You'll see two screws (sometimes one in the center) holding the bake element at the back. Unscrew them.
  • Gently pull the element forward a few inches. You'll see two metal terminals/wires connected at the back.
  • Note which wire goes on which terminal (take a photo), then remove the wires by pulling the metal connectors straight off.
  • Install the new element by connecting the wires and securing it with the screws. It's a direct swap.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK: The issue could be the oven's thermal fuse or the bake relay on the main control board. These require a multimeter to test and are more involved—likely a technician call.

HEADS UP: The bake and broil elements are different parts. Make sure you order the correct "bake" or "lower" element for your model number (KFEG500ESS).
