The Epson WorkForce WF-2860 utilizes a CIS (Contact Image Sensor) scanning system. Over time, the glass platen accumulates a mixture of fingerprint oils, dust, and "scanner streaks"—which are often microscopic particles of toner or ink from previous documents that have adhered to the surface. If these contaminants remain, the scanner interprets them as physical lines or spots on your digital output, regardless of how clean the original document is. The primary risk during cleaning is liquid ingress. The WF-2860 is not sealed against moisture; if glass cleaner or water seeps under the bezel or into the edges of the glass platen, it can cause permanent corrosion of the scan head electronics or create "fogging" between the glass and the sensor. Furthermore, using abrasive materials like paper towels can create micro-scratches in the glass, which will manifest as permanent white lines in every single scan you perform.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to ensure a streak-free finish without damaging the internal optics.
- Power down the unit completely. Press the power button, then physically pull the power cord from the back of the printer to ensure there is no residual current in the logic board.
- Open the scanner lid fully. If your model has a document feeder attachment, ensure it is locked in the open position to prevent it from slamming shut during the process.
- Prepare your cleaning solution. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners or acetone. Use a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol, or a dedicated streak-free glass cleaner.
- Apply the cleaner to a high-density microfiber cloth. Never spray the glass directly. The liquid can run down the sides of the platen and enter the internal chassis.
- Wipe the glass platen starting from the top-left corner and moving in a consistent "S" pattern toward the bottom-right. This prevents you from dragging the same piece of debris across the same area repeatedly.
- Pay special attention to the very edges of the glass where it meets the plastic frame; this is where "ink buildup" typically occurs. Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to gently clean the perimeter seam.
- Use a second, completely dry microfiber cloth to buff the glass in circular motions until all streaks are gone.
- Close the lid gently and plug the unit back in. Perform a "Blank Scan" (scan a white piece of paper) to verify that all streaks and spots have been removed.
If That Didn't Work
- Stubborn Ink Smudges: If you see "ghost" lines that won't budge, these are likely dried ink deposits. Dampen a cotton swab with 90% isopropyl alcohol and hold it against the spot for 30 seconds to soften the ink before gently wiping it away.
- Internal Dust: If the streaks appear to be underneath the glass, you are dealing with dust on the CIS sensor. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the gaps around the edges of the glass platen to dislodge particles.
- Calibration Issues: If the scan is clean but the colors are off, perform a "Scanner Glass Calibration" through the Maintenance menu on the printer's LCD screen to reset the white balance.
- Micro-Scratches: If the "streaks" are actually physical scratches in the glass, these cannot be cleaned. You can minimize their visibility by adjusting the scan settings to a lower DPI (e.g., 300 instead of 1200) or using a photo editing software to "clone stamp" out the line.
Heads Up
- Avoid using paper towels or napkins; these are made of wood pulp and can leave permanent micro-abrasions on the soft glass of the WF-2860.
- Never use bleach or window cleaners containing ammonia, as these can strip the anti-reflective coating off the scanner glass over time.
- Always ensure the glass is 100% dry before closing the lid and scanning, as trapped moisture can create a "foggy" effect on the edges of your documents.
- Clean the underside of the scanner lid (the white plastic part) with a dry cloth, as black scuffs on the lid can sometimes reflect back into the sensor and cause dark borders on your scans.
