Even if the router is physically close, the RV2820AE is strictly compatible with 2.4 GHz frequencies. Most modern routers use "Smart Connect" or "Band Steering," which merges the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into a single SSID. When this happens, the router often tries to "push" the robot to the 5 GHz band to optimize network traffic, which the robot cannot support, resulting in an immediate disconnect and an "Offline" error in the app. Furthermore, this specific model struggles with WPA3 security protocols and certain DNS configurations. If your router is set to WPA3 or a hybrid WPA2/WPA3 mode, the robot may authenticate initially but fail to maintain a persistent heartbeat connection to the Shark servers. You can confirm this is a network issue if the robot still performs manual cleaning cycles via the physical buttons on the chassis but remains unresponsive to app commands.
How to Fix It
To resolve the connectivity gap and bring the RV2820AE back online, follow these precise steps to isolate the frequency and security settings:
- Log into your router's admin panel (usually via 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) and locate the Wireless Settings.
- Disable "Smart Connect" or "Band Steering." This will allow you to give the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands different names (SSIDs). Name the 2.4 GHz band something distinct, such as "HomeWifi_2.4G."
- Change the Security Mode from WPA3 or "Auto" to strictly WPA2-PSK (AES). This is the most stable protocol for the RV2820AE.
- On your smartphone, go to Wi-Fi settings and manually connect to the newly named "HomeWifi_2.4G" network. This ensures the app passes the correct credentials to the robot during setup.

- Toggle Airplane Mode: On some Android and iOS devices, the app fails to hand over the IP address to the robot. Turn on Airplane Mode, then manually re-enable only Wi-Fi. This prevents cellular data from interfering with the local handshake process.
- Assign a Static IP: If you are tech-savvy, access your router's DHCP reservation table and assign a static IP address to the MAC address of the RV2820AE. This prevents the robot from going offline when the router refreshes the DHCP lease.

- Avoid Special Characters: Ensure your Wi-Fi password does not contain complex symbols (like & or %) as the RV2820AE's firmware can sometimes misinterpret these, leading to intermittent "Offline" errors.
