The Shark Detect Pro RV2820AE utilizes a small, high-torque DC motor to drive the side-spinning brush. When the brush ceases to rotate entirely, it is almost always due to "centripetal winding." This occurs when long hair, synthetic carpet fibers, or sewing threads wrap around the base of the brush hub. Over time, these fibers migrate underneath the plastic cap of the brush, creating a physical wedge that locks the brush against the chassis of the vacuum, preventing the motor from overcoming the friction. If the brush doesn't spin but you don't hear a grinding noise, the motor may have entered a "thermal protection" state or a gear has stripped. To confirm the cause, attempt to spin the brush manually with your finger while the unit is off; if it feels stiff or "springy" rather than rotating freely 360 degrees, you have a mechanical obstruction. If it spins freely but doesn't move during a cleaning cycle, the issue is likely electrical or a failure in the internal drive gear.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to clear the obstruction and restore rotation:
- Power down the RV2820AE completely by pressing the power button and ensuring it is not in a standby state.
- Grip the side brush firmly and pull it straight upward. The brush is held by a friction-fit post; it should pop off with a moderate tug.
- Inspect the underside of the brush hub. Use a pair of precision tweezers or a seam ripper to cut through any hair or string wound around the center axle. Do not simply pull the hair, as this can tighten the knot further into the motor housing.
- Check the drive post (the plastic peg remaining on the vacuum). If hair has wound around the post itself, use a needle to pick out the debris until the post is completely clean.
- Clean the "well" around the post using a can of compressed air to blow out any fine dust or grit that may be causing friction between the brush and the chassis.
- Slide the brush back onto the post, ensuring it clicks fully into place.
- Run a "Spot Clean" cycle to verify that the brush begins spinning immediately upon startup.
If That Didn't Work
- Gearbox Inspection: If the brush is clean but still won't spin, the internal drive gear may be jammed. Remove the two Phillips-head screws located on the underside of the chassis near the side brush assembly. Carefully lift the plastic cover to expose the gear train. Look for a small pebble or piece of plastic debris lodged between the motor gear and the drive gear. Clear the debris and reassemble.
- Hard Reset: Occasionally, the onboard logic board fails to send voltage to the side brush motor. Perform a hard reset by removing the battery pack from the bottom of the unit for 60 seconds, then reinserting it. This clears the temporary memory and resets the motor controllers.
- Brush Replacement: The internal plastic hub of the brush can crack, causing the brush to slip on the post without actually gripping it. Compare your brush to a new replacement part; if the center hole is widened or warped, replace the brush assembly.
- Motor Continuity Test: If you have a multimeter, check for continuity at the motor terminals. A "dead" motor will show an open circuit or an infinite resistance reading, indicating the motor windings have burned out and the entire side-brush motor assembly must be replaced.

- Weekly Maintenance: To prevent motor burnout, remove the side brush every Sunday and clear any hair wrap. Once hair reaches the motor axle, it can permanently damage the gearbox.
- Avoid Wet Surfaces: Never use the RV2820AE on damp floors. Water ingress through the side brush post can corrode the motor terminals, leading to a total loss of rotation.
- Avoid "Tangle-Prone" Areas: Be cautious when vacuuming near loose threads, ribbons, or shoelaces, as these are the primary cause of "instant-seize" failures in the side brush mechanism.
- Genuine Parts: When replacing the brush, use OEM Shark parts. Third-party brushes often have slightly different diameters, which can cause the brush to rub against the chassis, increasing friction and overheating the motor.
