The Dyson V15 Detect utilizes a high-velocity centrifugal system to separate debris from airflow. When the bin is "full," it isn't just the volume of the clear canister that is the issue; fine particulate matter, pet hair, and static-charged dust often cling to the interior walls of the clear bin and the lower rim of the cyclone shroud. Because the red release lever only opens the bottom trapdoor, any debris stuck above that pivot point—specifically in the "dead zone" between the cyclone assembly and the bin wall—remains trapped. This occurs primarily because of electrostatic buildup and the "caking" effect, where moisture or grease binds fine dust to the plastic. If you notice a layer of grey film or clumps of hair clinging to the top of the bin even after emptying, the airflow is being restricted. This doesn't just leave debris behind; it creates a pressure imbalance that can trigger the V15's "Airway Blocked" alert, even if the bottom of the bin is empty.
How to Fix It
To fully clear the debris from the top of the bin and the cyclone interface, follow this deep-cleaning sequence:
- Power down the machine and remove the battery pack to ensure no accidental activation occurs during the cleaning process.
- Press the red bin release slider firmly downward to open the base cap. Hold the vacuum over a waste bin.
- While the base is open, take a dry, stiff-bristled nylon brush (or a dedicated detailing brush) and gently scrub the inner circumference of the clear bin, focusing on the upper 2 inches where the bin meets the cyclone shroud.
- Rotate the vacuum 360 degrees, scrubbing the inner walls to dislodge "caked" dust that the gravity-drop mechanism cannot reach.
- Inspect the rubber seal (the black gasket) at the bottom of the bin. If hair is wrapped around this seal, use a pair of tweezers to pull it out, as this often prevents the trapdoor from sealing perfectly, reducing suction.
- Once the interior is clear, slide the red lever back up to lock the bin.
- Perform a "purge" by running the vacuum on Boost mode for 5 seconds into a small pile of debris to ensure the airflow is completely unobstructed.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Full Bin Removal: If debris is stuck deeper in the shroud, you must remove the bin entirely. Press the red button on the bin's side and pull the clear canister away from the main body. This allows you to access the "hidden" ledge of the cyclone where hair often wraps around the intake ports. Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the plastic rim of the bin.
- Clear the Cyclone Shroud: Use a can of compressed air to blow out the small crevices around the cyclone assembly. Aim the nozzle into the gaps where the bin attaches to the main body to force out trapped particulates that are too small for a brush to reach.
- Check the Pre-Filter: If the bin is clear but the vacuum still feels "full" or restricted, unscrew the filter assembly at the back. If the filter is clogged with fine dust, it creates back-pressure that pushes debris back toward the bin instead of pulling it through the cyclone. Wash the filter with cold water and let it dry for 24 hours.
- Inspect the Flap Valve: Check the rubber flap on the bottom trapdoor for tears or warping. If the flap is bent, it can catch hair and debris, preventing a clean "dump" and leaving a residue of dirt every time you empty the machine.

- Avoid Water in the Bin: Never wash the clear bin or the cyclone assembly with water. Water trapped in the cyclone shroud can lead to permanent odors and can damage the motor if it seeps into the main body.
- Empty More Frequently: To prevent caking, empty the V15 bin when it reaches the "MAX" line. Waiting until it is overfilled compresses the debris, making it more likely to stick to the walls.
- Static Reduction: If you live in a very dry climate, a tiny amount of anti-static spray on a cloth, wiped along the outside of the bin, can help reduce the amount of dust that clings to the interior walls.
- Hair Wrap Warning: If you have long hair or pets, check the bin seal weekly. Hair that wraps around the bin's locking mechanism can prevent the bin from seating correctly, leading to air leaks and loss of suction.
