The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute utilizes a specific Fluffy Optic cleaner head that houses a precisely angled green laser diode. When the standard LED lighting functions but the green laser does not, the diode itself has rarely "burned out" as these are solid-state components designed for thousands of hours of use. Instead, the issue is almost always a failure in the electrical communication loop between the V15 main body and the cleaner head's internal circuitry.
The V15 uses a series of gold-plated pogo pins to transmit power and data. Because the laser requires a specific voltage trigger to activate, even a microscopic layer of fine dust, pet hair, or electrostatic buildup on these contact points can create enough resistance to prevent the laser from firing while still allowing the simpler LED lights to operate. Additionally, the V15 has an onboard sensor that detects which head is attached; if the connection is loose or the pins are slightly recessed, the machine will not "handshake" with the Optic head, leaving the laser dormant.
How to Fix It
Follow these exact steps to restore the laser functionality. Ensure the vacuum is powered off and the battery is not actively charging during this process.
- Disconnect the Fluffy Optic cleaner head from the main wand. Inspect the gold contact pins on the neck of the cleaner head. If you see any black carbon buildup or grey dust, use a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the pins.
- Inspect the corresponding contact pads on the bottom of the wand/main body. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to wipe these pads. Ensure there are no small pebbles or debris lodged in the recessed areas around the pins.
- Remove the soft roller brush from the cleaner head by flipping the head over and sliding the end cap release. Check for any tangled hair or debris that may have migrated into the internal housing, as extreme debris buildup can occasionally trigger a safety shut-off for the laser diode.
- Reinsert the roller and snap the cleaner head back onto the wand. Apply firm pressure and ensure you hear a distinct "click." If the head is slightly skewed, the pins will not align perfectly, and the laser will remain off.
- Power on the vacuum and select "Eco" or "Auto" mode. The laser is designed to activate automatically on hard floors; ensure you are testing it on a hard surface rather than a rug, as the sensors may inhibit the laser on carpet.
If That Didn't Work
- Hard Reset the Battery: Occasionally, the V15 logic board glitches and fails to recognize the accessory. Remove the battery (if you have the screw-out version) or hold the power trigger for 10 seconds while the machine is off to discharge residual capacitance. Then, re-attach the laser head and power it on.
- Test with a Different Power Mode: Switch the machine to "Boost" mode. Some users report that the laser fails to trigger in "Eco" mode if the battery charge is below 10%, as the machine prioritizes suction over the laser diode to preserve the remaining voltage.
- Inspect for Pin Recess: Look closely at the gold pins on the cleaner head. If one pin is pushed in further than the others (recessed), it will not make contact with the wand. Gently use a needle to see if the pin springs back; if it is stuck, the head requires a component replacement.
- Cross-Reference with Another Tool: Attach a standard Motorhead or Digital Turbine head. If the regular LEDs on those heads also fail, the issue lies in the main body's power delivery system rather than the laser head itself.

- Avoid using silicone-based lubricants or WD-40 on the electrical contacts, as this creates an insulating layer that permanently blocks the laser signal.
- The green laser is highly sensitive to ambient light; if you are testing this in a room with direct, bright sunlight, the laser may be active but invisible to the naked eye. Test in a dimmed environment.
- Never use abrasive scouring pads on the gold contact pins, as scratching the plating will lead to rapid oxidation and permanent connection failure.
- Ensure you are using the official Dyson Fluffy Optic head; third-party replacement heads often lack the specific chip required to trigger the V15's laser activation sequence.
