DIAGNOSIS A loud grinding noise during agitation, with normal spin, indicates a problem with the agitator dogs or the agitator itself. On this model, worn plastic agitator dogs (also called cams) inside the top of the agitator fail to engage properly, causing slippage and noise.
FIX Unplug the washer. Remove the agitator cap by prying it up with a flat tool. Unscrew the agitator bolt underneath (7/16" or 11mm socket). Lift the entire plastic agitator straight up and off the shaft. Inspect the plastic cogs (dogs) inside the agitator's base. If they are rounded or broken, you must replace the entire agitator assembly, part number WH49X10098.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK With the agitator removed, check the splines on the metal agitator shaft for wear or damage. If the shaft splines are stripped, the transmission must be replaced—a major repair.
