The Denali Tanker, like all pressure canners, relies on specific rubber and plastic safety components to maintain a proper seal and prevent dangerous over-pressurization. These parts degrade naturally over time due to heat, steam, and pressure cycles, losing their flexibility and integrity.
How to Fix It
You should proactively replace the key wear parts on a schedule and with every visual inspection. Follow this specific procedure:
- Sealing Ring (Gasket): Inspect before each use. Replace it if it's hardened, stretched, cracked, flattened, or has any nicks or pits. Replace it at least every three years regardless of appearance.
- Overpressure Plug (Safety Plug): This is a critical safety device. It must be replaced every single time you replace the sealing ring, without exception. Also replace it immediately if it appears swollen, discolored, or deformed.
- General Schedule: Adhere to a maximum three-year replacement cycle for both the sealing ring and overpressure plug as a pair, even if they look fine. More frequent, heavy use will require more frequent replacement.
If That Didn't Work
If you're experiencing consistent pressure loss or failure to seal even with new parts, check the canner lid's sealing surface and the body's rim for any burrs, dents, or food residue that could prevent a tight fit.
