Diagnosis
Yeah, this one's common. A loud grinding or metallic scraping noise during the spin is almost always something caught between the inner wash basket and the outer tub, like a bra underwire, coin, or key. It's not usually a sign of a failing transmission or bearings on these models.
How to Fix It
Unplug the washer. Tilt it back carefully and look underneath for the access panel to the outer tub. You'll need to remove a few screws. Once open, you can manually rotate the inner basket and feel around the gap between the basket and tub for the object. Use needle-nose pliers or a magnetic tool to fish it out. It's a bit of a contortionist act, but cheaper than a service call.
If That Didn't Work
If you can't find anything and the noise persists, it could be a worn-out drive coupler (the piece connecting the motor to the transmission), but that's less common and sounds more like a loud thumping. For a true high-pitched grind, keep looking for a foreign object.
Heads Up
Always check pockets before washing, obviously, but also check the rubber bellows (the flexible seal at the top of the basket) for small items that can get lodged there and eventually work their way down.
