When the machine only displays "Hot Water" options and fails to recognize the pod adapter, it means the sensor circuit is open. The machine believes the brew head is empty or that only the drip-tray is present, thus defaulting to the basic hot water function. This failure is typically caused by one of three things: a misalignment of the pod adapter during insertion, a buildup of dried coffee oils and calcium deposits on the contact points, or a displaced magnet within the adapter itself. If the adapter is not seated with a flush, airtight seal against the upper housing, the internal switch will not trigger, and the software will not unlock the "Pod" brewing menu. You can confirm this by attempting to lock the adapter and noticing if there is any slight "give" or wiggle room; a properly detected adapter should be completely immobile.
How to Fix It
To resolve the detection issue and restore the pod brewing options, follow these precise steps to clean the interface and reset the seating:
- Power down the machine and unplug it from the wall outlet to clear the temporary memory cache.
- Remove the pod adapter completely. Inspect the underside of the brew head (the ceiling of the chamber) for any stray coffee grounds, pods, or hardened mineral scale.
- Use a damp, lint-free microfiber cloth with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to wipe the gold-colored contact pins located inside the brew head. Gently wipe the corresponding contact points on the pod adapter.
- Check the adapter for any physical debris inside the locking mechanism. Ensure the adapter's locking handle moves freely through its full range of motion.
- Re-insert the pod adapter, ensuring it is pushed firmly upward into the housing before engaging the lock. You should feel a distinct "click" or a firm stop.
- Lock the adapter handle completely. If the handle does not feel fully seated, pull it back and push it forward again with firm pressure.
- Plug the machine back in and power it on. The display should now transition from "Hot Water" to the "Pod" menu options.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Reset: Unplug the unit for exactly 60 seconds. While unplugged, hold down the "Brew" button for 10 seconds to discharge any remaining capacitors. Plug it back in and immediately attempt to lock the adapter. This often clears "ghost" errors in the sensor logic.

- Test with a Different Adapter: If you have access to another CFP301 unit, swap the adapters. If a different adapter is detected immediately, your specific adapter's contact pins are worn out or bent. If the machine still doesn't detect a known working adapter, the internal reed switch in the brew head has failed and requires professional repair.
