Diagnosis
The most common cause for extremely slow coffee flow (dripping) on your De'Longhi Magnifica S is that the internal burr grinder is set too fine. An overly fine grind creates a densely packed coffee puck in the filter basket that water cannot pass through efficiently.
How to Fix It
Coarsen the grind setting.
- Turn the machine on and initiate a grinding cycle by pressing the coffee button (or placing a container under the grinder outlet and pressing the "Grind" button if your model has one).
- While the grinder is running, turn the front grinding adjustment dial ONE click clockwise. This makes the grind coarser.
- Run a brewing cycle without coffee to clear any old, fine grounds from the system.
- Now make a coffee. If the flow is still too slow, repeat the process: run the grinder and turn the dial one more click clockwise. Test with a fresh coffee. It may take two cycles for the new, coarser setting to fully take effect.
If That Didn't Work
Other possible blockages need investigation.
- Clean the coffee spouts: Inspect the two metal outlets where coffee flows into your cup. Use a toothpick or pin to clear any dried coffee or grounds lodged inside.
- Descale the machine: Severe limescale buildup in the internal brew circuit can restrict flow. If it's been over 3 months or in a hard water area, run a descaling cycle using De'Longhi descaler or a citric acid solution as specified for your model.
- Check the brew group: Remove and inspect the brew unit for hardened coffee residue. Rinse it under warm water and gently scrub with a soft brush, then reinsert it securely.
Heads Up
Only adjust the grind dial while the grinder is running to prevent damaging the burrs. Never force the dial past its stops. For consistent results, use fresh beans and ensure the bean hopper lid is closed during grinding.
