Diagnosis
The grinding noise you hear is the sound of the brush motor attempting to rotate against a physical obstruction. In the Eufy RoboVac 11S, the rolling brush is driven by a gear system; when hair, long threads, or small debris (like rubber bands or carpet fibers) wrap tightly around the brush axle, they create immense friction. This friction prevents the brush from spinning, causing the motor to strain and produce a loud, mechanical grinding sound. If the brush is completely immobilized, the motor may eventually trigger a safety shutdown to prevent overheating, resulting in a "brush jammed" error or a total failure of the brush to engage even after a restart. You can confirm this by flipping the unit over and attempting to rotate the brush manually; if it feels stiff or resists movement, the blockage is internal. In some cases, the grinding is caused by a worn-out brush bearing or a foreign object (like a coin or pebble) wedged between the brush and the plastic housing.
How to Fix It
To resolve the grinding noise and restore brush rotation, follow these precise steps to deep-clean the drive mechanism:
- Power down the RoboVac 11S completely by toggling the power switch to the OFF position to prevent accidental activation during cleaning.
- Flip the vacuum over so the bottom is facing up. Locate the plastic brush guard (the frame surrounding the main roller).
- Press the two release tabs located on the sides of the brush guard and lift the guard away from the chassis.
- Lift the rolling brush out of the vacuum. Note the orientation of the brush so you can reinsert it correctly.
- Slide the brush out of its plastic end caps. Most of the grinding is caused by "hair rings"—tightly wound clumps of hair that migrate to the very edges of the brush where it meets the motor axle.
- Use a pair of sharp scissors or the included cleaning tool to slice through the hair along the length of the bristles. Specifically, clear the grooves at the ends of the brush roll where debris accumulates.
- Inspect the drive gear (the small plastic peg on the left side of the housing). Use a can of compressed air or a dry toothbrush to remove any grit or hair wrapped around the drive spindle.
- Reinsert the brush, ensuring it is seated flush against the drive gear, snap the brush guard back into place until you hear a click, and power the unit back on.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Brush Roll: If the plastic ends of the brush are worn down or the bristles are completely matted, the brush may slip on the drive gear. Replace the roller with a new OEM Eufy 11S brush kit to ensure a tight fit.
- Check for Gearbox Failure: If the brush is completely clean and free-spinning but the grinding persists when the motor engages, the internal plastic gears in the gearbox may have stripped a tooth. This requires a full replacement of the brush motor assembly.
- Inspect the Side Brushes: Sometimes a grinding noise is misidentified as coming from the main brush when it is actually a side-brush gear. Remove the side brushes by unscrewing them and check for hair wrapped around the small motor pins.
- Hard Reset the Logic Board: If the motor is stuttering (causing a rhythmic grinding), perform a hard reset by turning the unit off and on again and placing it on the charging base for 30 minutes to clear any software-level jam errors.

- Avoid Wet Cleaning: Never use water or liquid cleaners on the rolling brush or the internal housing; moisture can seep into the brush motor and cause permanent electrical failure.
- Weekly Maintenance: To prevent the grinding noise from returning, clear the brush ends every 7 days, especially in households with long-haired pets.
- Avoid Stringy Debris: Be cautious of sewing threads, ribbons, or shoelaces. These materials wrap tighter than hair and can melt into the plastic axle due to friction heat.
- Check the Guard: Ensure the brush guard is snapped in completely. If the guard is slightly loose, it can rub against the spinning brush, creating a high-pitched rattling or grinding sound.
