Diagnosis
The "funky" appearance inside your Keurig K-Mini reservoir is typically a buildup of mineral deposits (scale) or a biofilm caused by stagnant water and organic residue. Because the K-Mini reservoir is integrated and not removable, you cannot simply pop it in the dishwasher; you must perform a manual surface clean and a chemical descale to ensure the water path is sanitary.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to deep-clean the reservoir and the internal lines:
- Surface Clean: Unplug the brewer. Use a damp, lint-free cloth dipped in mild dish soap to wipe the interior walls and the underside of the reservoir lid. Avoid abrasive sponges that can scratch the plastic and create more areas for bacteria to hide.
- Rinse: Wipe the interior again with a clean, damp cloth to remove all soap residue. Allow the unit to air dry; do not use paper towels or linty cloths inside the tank.
- Descale the Internal Path: To clean the parts you can't reach, fill the reservoir with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water.
- Cycle: Run several brewing cycles with the vinegar solution (without a K-Cup pod) until the reservoir is empty.
- Fresh Water Flush: Fill the reservoir with fresh, filtered water and run 3-4 more brewing cycles to remove any remaining vinegar taste.
If That Didn't Work
If a slimy film persists or the water flow is still sluggish, use a commercial Keurig Descaling Solution instead of vinegar. These professional-grade acids are more effective at breaking down heavy calcium carbonate buildup that manual wiping cannot reach.
Heads Up
Never immerse the entire K-Mini brewer in water or place it in a dishwasher, as this will destroy the internal electronics. To prevent future buildup, empty the reservoir and let it air dry if you plan to leave the machine unused for more than a week.
