The Keurig K-Mini is designed with a highly aggressive power-saving circuit. Unlike larger Keurig models that may stay lit for several minutes or have a programmable sleep timer, the K-Mini is engineered for minimal energy footprints. The machine is programmed to trigger a complete system shutdown exactly 90 seconds after the brew cycle finishes or after the power button is pressed without a brew starting. This is not a hardware failure or a short circuit; it is a hard-coded firmware setting. You can confirm this is the intended behavior by observing the power button light. Once the brew cycle ends and the pump stops, the light remains solid for 90 seconds. If you do not press the button again during this window, the light will extinguish, and the internal heating element will discharge. If the machine were "broken" (such as a blown thermal fuse or a faulty capacitors on the control board), it would typically shut off *during* the brew cycle or fail to power on at all, rather than shutting off consistently after a period of inactivity.
How to Fix It
Because this is a built-in feature and not a malfunction, there is no setting in the menu to disable the Auto-Off function. To operate the machine after it has shut down, follow these exact steps to ensure a clean brew:
- Ensure the water reservoir is filled to at least the minimum fill line (approximately 12oz) to prevent the pump from sucking air, which can cause the machine to shut off prematurely due to an overheat error.
- Press the power button once. You will see the light illuminate.
- Wait for the "priming" sound—a loud vibrating noise from the internal pump—to subside. This usually takes 3 to 5 seconds.
- Insert your K-Cup pod firmly into the holder and lower the handle completely until it clicks into the locked position.
- Press the brew button immediately. If you wait longer than 90 seconds between powering on and pressing brew, the machine will shut off again, and you will have to repeat the process.
If That Didn't Work
If your machine is shutting off *during* the brewing process (before the coffee is finished) or immediately after you press the button, try these alternatives:
- Perform a Hard Reset: Unplug the unit from the wall outlet for exactly 60 seconds. While unplugged, press and hold the brew button for 10 seconds to discharge any remaining electricity in the capacitors. Plug it back in and attempt a brew with only water (no pod) to see if the cycle completes.
- Deep Clean the Exit Needle: A clogged exit needle (the bottom needle that pierces the pod) creates back-pressure. This pressure can trigger a safety shut-off to prevent the water tank from bursting. Use a straightened paperclip to gently clear any coffee grounds stuck in the needle at the bottom of the pod holder.
- Check for Scale Buildup: Calcium deposits in the heating element cause the machine to work harder to heat water, which can lead to thermal overheating and an automatic safety shutdown. Run a cycle of 50% white vinegar and 50% water, followed by three full reservoirs of plain water.
- Inspect the Power Cord: Ensure the plug is pushed firmly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip or surge protector. The K-Mini draws a significant amount of current to heat the element; if it's on a daisy-chained extension cord, the voltage drop can cause the control board to reboot or shut down.

- Avoid using "My K-Cup" reusable pods that are overfilled; if the coffee is packed too tightly, the pump will strain and the machine may shut off to protect the motor.
- Always use filtered water to prevent the scale buildup mentioned above, which is the primary cause of actual hardware failure in the K-Mini series.
