Diagnosis
The musty smell in your Auertech portable washer is caused by a buildup of detergent residue, fabric softener, minerals from hard water, and mold or mildew growing in damp, hidden areas. This is common in portable washers due to their compact design and frequent lid closure.
How to Fix It
Perform this deep clean monthly. First, unplug the machine. Manually clean the visible lint filter(s) and the small inlet filter screen, usually located where the water hose connects. Then, pour 2-3 cups of white distilled vinegar directly into the empty wash tub. Run a complete wash cycle (no detergent, no clothes) using hot water if your model has that setting. After the cycle, wipe the entire interior tub, lid gasket (if present), and agitator with a cloth dampened with a mild soap solution, then rinse. Finally, leave the lid fully open in a well-ventilated area until the interior is completely bone dry.
If That Didn't Work
For persistent odors, use a washing machine cleaner tablet or powder designed for front-loaders, following its instructions. Alternatively, after the vinegar cycle, run a second empty cycle with 1/2 cup of baking soda in the tub. Ensure you are not overusing detergent; for portable washers, use 1-2 tablespoons of HE detergent at most. Check for and clean any hidden drain pump filter, as described in your model's manual, where debris can accumulate.
Heads Up
Never use bleach or abrasive cleaners on the plastic tub, as they can damage it. Always unplug the appliance before cleaning any filters or internal parts. Regular maintenance—leaving the lid open after every wash and using less detergent—is the best way to prevent smells from returning.
