Diagnosis
The iSpring T32M is a diaphragm-style pressurized tank. When you experience a slow trickle despite the tank appearing "full" (meaning the RO membrane has finished its cycle), you are likely dealing with a loss of the internal air cushion. The tank consists of two chambers separated by a rubber bladder: one side holds the purified water, and the other holds compressed air. This air pressure is what pushes the water out of the faucet. If the air pressure is too low or the bladder has ruptured, the water simply sits in the tank with no force to move it toward the tap.
To confirm this, perform a "lift test." Physically lift the tank. If it feels heavy (full of water) but only a trickle comes out, the air pressure is depleted. If the tank feels light (empty) but the system is still producing water, the membrane is simply too slow to provide a steady stream. If you hear a "gurgling" sound at the faucet or see air bubbles in the stream, the bladder is likely compromised. Another possibility is a clogged 1/4" poly tubing line or a restricted flow valve at the tank's top connection point.
How to Fix It
To restore pressure, you must manually recharge the air bladder using a standard tire pressure gauge and a bicycle pump or air compressor. Follow these exact steps:
- Close the Source: Turn off the cold water supply valve leading into the RO system.
- Drain the Tank: Open the RO faucet and let it run until the water stops completely. This removes the water weight and allows you to accurately measure the air pressure.
- Locate the Valve: Find the air valve (Schrader valve) located on the bottom or side of the T32M tank, usually protected by a plastic cap.
- Measure Current Pressure: Attach a pressure gauge to the valve. For the T32M, the pre-charge pressure should be between 7 and 10 PSI when the tank is empty of water.
- Add Air: Use a pump to add air in small increments. Do not exceed 10 PSI. If you over-pressurize, you will reduce the actual volume of water the tank can hold.
- Flush and Test: Close the faucet, turn the water supply back on, and wait approximately 2 to 4 hours for the tank to refill. Open the faucet to verify the flow rate has returned to a strong stream.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for a Ruptured Bladder: Place a small amount of air into the valve and then press the center pin of the Schrader valve with a small screwdriver. If water squirts out of the air valve, the internal rubber diaphragm has burst. The T32M tank cannot be repaired in this state and must be replaced entirely.
- Install a Booster Pump: If your home's incoming water pressure is below 45 PSI, the RO membrane cannot push water into the tank efficiently, leaving the tank only partially filled. Install an iSpring booster pump between the pre-filters and the membrane housing to increase the input pressure.
- Inspect the Tank Valve: Ensure the blue plastic valve on top of the tank is turned fully to the "Open" position. Sometimes these valves are bumped during installation or cleaning, restricting the flow to a trickle.
- Replace the Flow Restrictor: If the tank never seems to get "heavy" or full, your flow restrictor may be clogged, preventing the membrane from producing water at the necessary rate to pressurize the tank.
Heads Up
- Avoid Over-inflation: Never pump the tank to 30 or 40 PSI. The 7-10 PSI range is critical; exceeding this will leave no room for water in the bladder, resulting in a very short burst of water followed by a trickle.
- Annual Maintenance: Check the air pressure once a year. It is normal for the air cushion to leak slightly over time through the valve seal.
- Temperature Sensitivity: In very cold garages or basements, the air pressure in the tank can drop, leading to lower flow rates during winter months.
- Tubing Kinks: Check the 1/4" tubing behind the tank. Because the T32M is rounded, tubing can easily get pinched against a wall, restricting flow regardless of tank pressure.
