Diagnosis
The leak you are experiencing in your iSpring T32M system is almost always caused by an incomplete seat within the "push-to-connect" or quick-connect fitting. These fittings rely on a dual-seal mechanism: a stainless steel gripping ring (collet) that locks the tube in place and a small internal rubber O-ring that creates the actual watertight seal. If the tubing is not pushed past this O-ring, water will bypass the seal and leak from the base of the fitting. This commonly happens during initial installation because the tubing is stiff or the user stops pushing once they feel the initial resistance of the O-ring. Another frequent cause is a "diagonal cut" on the tubing. If the end of the tube is not cut perfectly square (90 degrees), the tube will enter the fitting at a slight angle, preventing the O-ring from wrapping completely around the circumference of the pipe, leaving a microscopic gap for water to escape under pressure. You can confirm this by wiping the fitting dry and using a paper towel to pinpoint if the water is seeping from the very base of the connection or dripping from the collet.
How to Fix It
To resolve this leak, you must reset the connection and ensure a precise, perpendicular seal. Follow these exact steps:
- Shut off the cold water supply valve and open the RO faucet to bleed the pressure from the lines.
- Locate the small blue plastic locking clip on the leaking fitting. Use your fingernail or a small flathead screwdriver to slide this clip out and set it aside.
- Depress the collet (the small ring surrounding the tube) firmly toward the body of the fitting. While holding the collet down, pull the plastic tubing straight out.
- Inspect the end of the tubing. If it looks jagged, crushed, or cut at an angle, you must trim it. Use a sharp utility knife or a dedicated tubing cutter to make a clean, square 90-degree cut. Avoid using scissors, as they tend to pinch and ovalize the tubing.
- Measure exactly 5/8 inch from the end of the tube and mark it with a permanent marker. This serves as your "depth gauge" to ensure the tube is fully seated.
- Push the tubing firmly into the fitting. You will feel an initial resistance (the O-ring); continue to push with steady pressure until the mark you made is hidden inside the fitting.
- Gently pull back on the tube to ensure the gripping teeth have locked.
- Slide the blue locking clip back into place to prevent the collet from accidentally depressing.
- Slowly turn the water supply back on and observe the fitting for 60 seconds.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect for Scratches: Examine the first inch of the tubing for deep longitudinal scratches or gouges. If the tube was scratched during the first installation attempt, the O-ring cannot seal against the damaged surface. Cut off the damaged section (about 1/2 inch) and repeat the installation process with a fresh, smooth end.
- Check for O-ring Displacement: If the leak persists despite a square cut and full insertion, the internal O-ring may have been pinched or displaced during the initial install. Remove the tube and use a flashlight to look inside the fitting. If the rubber ring looks skewed or torn, the fitting itself must be replaced.
- Verify Tube Diameter: Ensure you are using the correct 1/4" LLDPE tubing. If a non-standard or slightly oversized tube was substituted, it will not seat properly in the T32M quick-connects. The tube should slide in with firm pressure but not require extreme force.
- Check for Over-Tightening: If the fitting is threaded into a manifold, ensure the fitting isn't cross-threaded. If the plastic body of the fitting is cracked due to over-tightening with a wrench, no amount of tubing adjustment will stop the leak; you will need a replacement fitting.
Heads Up
- Never use Teflon tape or pipe sealant on the outside of the plastic tubing; the quick-connect system is designed to seal on raw, clean plastic. Adding tape will actually prevent the O-ring from seating and cause a leak.
- Avoid bending the tubing too sharply near the fitting. If the tube enters the fitting at an angle (due to a tight bend), it puts lateral pressure on the O-ring, which can cause a slow drip over time.
- Periodically check the blue locking clips. If they are missing, vibrations in the plumbing can cause the collet to shift, potentially leading to a "blow-out" where the tube pops out entirely.
- When flushing the system for the first time, keep a dry cloth wrapped around these fittings to catch any immediate drips before they soak your cabinetry.
