Diagnosis
When your iSpring RO system produces water that tastes identical to your tap water, you are experiencing a "bypass" event. This occurs when the raw feed water skips the Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane entirely and flows directly into the T32M storage tank and out through the faucet. Because the T32M is a pressurized vessel, once it is filled with unfiltered water, the taste will remain consistent until the tank is completely drained and refilled with purified water. The root cause is typically one of three things: a missing or improperly seated RO membrane, a cross-connection in the 1/4" LLDPE tubing, or a failure in the automatic shut-off valve (ASO) that allows raw water to flood the system. To confirm this, you must use a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) meter. Measure your tap water; if the water coming from the RO faucet reads within 10-20 points of the tap water reading, the membrane is being bypassed. If the membrane were working, you should see a 90-98% reduction in TDS.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps precisely to identify the leak and reset the system:
- Inspect the Membrane Housing: Locate the large horizontal housing at the top of the system. Unscrew the cap using the provided housing wrench. Reach inside to ensure the blue RO membrane element is fully inserted. The two O-rings on the membrane must be seated firmly against the internal shoulder of the housing. If the membrane is loose or missing, the water will simply flow around the edges of the filter and straight into the product line.
- Audit the Tubing Path: Trace the 1/4" tubing from the membrane housing. There are two exit ports: the "Pure Water" port and the "Waste Water" port. Ensure the line leading to the T32M tank is connected to the Pure Water port. If you have swapped these, you are sending waste-concentrate water into your storage tank.
- Check the ASO Valve: Locate the Automatic Shut-Off valve (the small square plastic component where four tubes meet). Ensure the line from the pre-filters enters the "In" port and the line to the membrane enters the "Out" port. A pinched tube here can cause pressure imbalances that force raw water into the storage line.
- Purge the T32M Tank: Once the hardware is verified, the tank is still full of tap water. Open the RO faucet and let it run until the flow slows to a trickle. This clears the contaminated water.
- Perform a Double Flush: Close the tank valve, allow the system to produce a small amount of water directly into a glass, test the TDS. If the TDS is now low, open the tank valve and let it fill completely, then drain the tank one more time before drinking.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the RO Membrane: If the tubing is correct and the membrane is seated, the membrane itself may be defective from the factory (a "blown" seal). Replace the membrane element (Part #RO-MEM) and check for a tight fit. A slight gap in the membrane seal allows high-pressure tap water to leak into the permeate stream.
- Verify the Check Valve: Inspect the small plastic check valve located at the exit of the membrane housing. If this valve is stuck open or leaking, it can allow water to flow backward or bypass the osmotic process, causing the tank to fill with low-quality water.
- Check for Tube Kinks: Ensure the tubing leading to the T32M tank is not kinked or pinched against a wall. A restriction in the pure water line can create back-pressure that forces water through the weakest point of the system, often bypassing the membrane seals.
Heads Up
- Air Pressure Maintenance: The T32M tank requires a pre-charge of 7-10 PSI when empty. If the tank pressure is too low, you will get a very weak stream of water, which users often mistake for a filter failure.
- Avoid Over-tightening: When sealing the membrane housing, do not over-tighten the cap. This can crack the plastic housing or deform the O-rings, creating a path for raw water to bypass the membrane.
- TDS Testing: Always test your water with a TDS meter after any filter change. Taste is subjective, but a TDS reading is an objective measurement of whether the RO process is actually occurring.
- Sanitization: If you accidentally filled your T32M tank with contaminated or stagnant tap water for several days, it is recommended to flush the tank three times to prevent bacterial biofilm buildup.
