The De'Longhi Magnifica S ECAM22110SB utilizes a thermoblock heating system, which is a compact heat exchanger that flashes water to temperature as it flows through. When coffee comes out lukewarm, it is rarely a total failure of the heating element; rather, it is a "thermal sink" issue. The internal brass infuser and the surrounding plastic housing act as heat sinks, absorbing the thermal energy from the water before it ever reaches your cup. If the machine has been sitting idle, the internal components are at room temperature, meaning the first few ounces of water are used to heat the metal parts of the machine rather than the beverage. Furthermore, calcium carbonate buildup (limescale) inside the thermoblock can create an insulating layer on the heating element. This prevents the water from reaching the target temperature efficiently, even if the machine indicates it is "ready." You can confirm this by running the steam wand; if the steam is weak or barely hot, you have a scaling issue. If the steam is scorching but the coffee is lukewarm, the issue is likely thermal loss within the brew group or cold ceramic cups.
How to Fix It
To maximize the temperature of your brew, follow this specific thermal priming sequence:
- Pre-heat the Circuit: Before inserting your coffee pod or grinding beans, run a "Long Coffee" cycle without any coffee in the machine. This flushes hot water through the thermoblock, the brass infuser, and the dispensing spouts, bringing the entire internal path up to operating temperature.
- Cup Thermalization: While the machine is running the blank shot, fill your ceramic cup with boiling water from a kettle and let it sit for 60 seconds. Empty the cup immediately before placing it under the spouts. A cold ceramic cup can drop the temperature of an espresso shot by as much as 10-15 degrees Celsius instantly.
- Adjust the Temperature Dial: Ensure the temperature settings are optimized. While the ECAM22110SB has limited manual temperature overrides compared to the higher-end PrimaDonna models, ensure the machine is plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip, as voltage drops can occasionally affect the heating speed of the thermoblock.
- Perform a Deep Descale: Use the De'Longhi EcoDecalk solution (approx. 100ml). Fill the water tank to the max line, pour the solution into the tank, and run the full descaling cycle. This removes the lime crust from the heating element, allowing for more efficient heat transfer to the water.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Infuser Gaskets: If the internal O-rings on the brew group (the removable part inside the machine) are worn or cracked, steam and heat can leak out of the sides of the brew chamber rather than being pushed through the coffee puck. Inspect the rubber seals for flattening or tears; if they look worn, replace the brew group seals to ensure a tight, pressurized seal.
- Check the Thermistor: If the machine fails to reach temperature even after a descale, the NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor may be faulty. This is the sensor that tells the machine when the water is hot enough. If it is sending incorrect readings, the machine may stop heating too early. This requires a technician to test the resistance of the sensor with a multimeter.
- Inspect the Flow Meter: If water is flowing too quickly through the machine (due to a grind that is too coarse or a failing flow meter), it spends less time in contact with the heating element of the thermoblock. Try increasing the coffee strength/fineness via the dial to slow the extraction, which allows the water to stay in the heating zone longer.

- Avoid Distilled Water: Never use 100% distilled water in the Magnifica S. The sensors require a specific mineral content to detect water levels and maintain thermal conductivity; distilled water can actually lead to overheating or sensor errors.
- Weekly Infuser Rinse: Remove the brew group weekly and rinse it under lukewarm tap water. Do not use soap. A buildup of old coffee oils can act as an insulator and affect the temperature of the extraction.
- Empty the Drip Tray: A full drip tray can sometimes cause the machine to struggle with internal pressure and drainage, which indirectly affects the consistency of the brew temperature.
- Descale Every 3 Months: Regardless of how many cups you make, the hard water in most regions will scale the thermoblock every 90 days. Consistent descaling is the only way to prevent permanent temperature drop.
