Diagnosis
The blinking POWER indicator on the Frigidaire EFIC189 is a status signal indicating that the unit is in "Standby Mode." In this state, the internal computer is powered, but the cooling compressor and the water pump are disabled. This often happens after a power surge, an accidental press of the power button, or when the unit has just been plugged in after a period of transport. The root cause is typically a logic lock. If the unit was recently moved or tilted during shipping or cleaning, the refrigerant gases and oil in the compressor may have shifted. To protect the hardware, the internal sensor prevents the unit from entering an active cooling cycle immediately. If the light continues to blink and refuses to turn solid after pressing the power button, the machine is likely detecting a fault—most commonly a lack of water in the reservoir or a sensor error triggered by a displaced ice basket.
How to Fix It
To move the EFIC189 from standby mode to active ice production, follow these precise steps:
- Hard Reset: Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet completely. If you have recently moved the appliance, leave it unplugged for a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes to allow the refrigerant to settle.
- Reservoir Check: Remove the ice collection basket. Look into the bottom of the unit to ensure the water reservoir is filled to the "MAX" line. If the "ADD WATER" light is blinking, the pump cannot prime, and the power light will not stay solid.
- Basket Seating: Reinsert the ice basket. Ensure it is seated flush against the bottom of the chassis. The unit has a safety switch; if the basket is tilted or not fully inserted, the cycle will not initiate.
- Power Activation: Plug the unit back into a grounded 120V outlet. Wait 10 seconds for the initial boot sequence.
- The Toggle: Press the "ON/OFF" button once firmly. The POWER light should transition from blinking to a solid, steady light.
- Verification: Listen for the internal pump to engage (a humming sound) and the water to be dispensed onto the freezing pins.
If That Didn't Work
- Clear the Ice Bridge: Check the freezing pins (the metal spikes where ice forms). If a thick layer of ice has built up or a "bridge" of frozen plastic/mineral deposits has formed, the sensor may think the cycle is complete or blocked. Use a lukewarm damp cloth to wipe the pins clean and dry them thoroughly before restarting.
- Check for Air Locks: If the POWER light is solid but no water is moving, there is an air bubble in the pump. Remove the ice basket, fill the reservoir, and quickly press the ON/OFF button three times in rapid succession to attempt to "jumpstart" the pump prime.
- Test the Outlet: Plug a different high-wattage appliance (like a hairdryer) into the same outlet. These compact makers are sensitive to voltage drops; if the outlet isn't providing a steady 120V, the logic board will enter a protective blink-state and refuse to engage the compressor.
- Clean the Sensors: Use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the "ADD WATER" sensor probe located at the bottom of the reservoir. Mineral buildup from hard water can coat the sensor, tricking the machine into thinking it is empty even when full.

- Avoid Extension Cords: Never plug the EFIC189 into a power strip or thin extension cord. The compressor requires a significant current spike to start; insufficient voltage will cause the POWER light to blink and the unit to fail.
- Water Quality: Use filtered water only. Using unfiltered tap water leads to calcium buildup on the freezing pins, which increases cycle time and can eventually cause sensor failures.
- Ventilation Space: Ensure there are at least 5 inches of open air space around the sides and back of the unit. If the unit overheats, the thermal protector will trip, causing the machine to enter a standby/blink mode to prevent compressor burnout.
- Defrosting: If you are not using the machine for more than 48 hours, empty the water, dry the interior, and leave it unplugged to prevent mold growth in the internal pump lines.
