A brief burning or dusty smell when you first start it up, or after it's been off for a while, is usually normal. It's often dust that settled on the heating elements or motor housing burning off.
- First, make sure you've removed all plastic packaging from both the unit and the filters.
- Unplug the unit, remove the filters, and check for any small bits of plastic or debris inside the unit. Use a vacuum hose attachment to gently clean the interior cavity.
- Reinsert the filters properly, plug it in, and run it on high speed for 30-60 minutes in a well-ventilated room with a window open.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK: If the smell is strong, persistent (lasting more than an hour), or genuinely electrical (acrid, like melting plastic), stop using it immediately and unplug it. This could indicate an electrical fault. Contact Honeywell support.
HEADS UP: Regular cleaning of the exterior vents and pre-filter can help minimize this. That initial smell should not recur every single time you use it, only after long periods of inactivity.
