my instant pot duo just keeps flashing ‘burn’ and won’t pressurize, food stuck to bottom.

— asked by Morgan

DIAGNOSIS The ‘BURN’ error is triggered by overheating at the bottom of the inner pot. This is caused by insufficient liquid or food scorching during the initial heating phase.

FIX 1. Cancel the program by pressing ‘Keep Warm/Cancel’. 2. Perform a Quick Release by turning the steam release valve to ‘Venting’. Wait. 3. Open the lid. 4. Carefully scrape the bottom of the pot with a wooden spoon to loosen stuck food. 5. Add at least 1 cup of liquid (water, broth). 6. Stir thoroughly. 7. Close lid, ensure steam release valve is set to ‘Sealing’. 8. Restart your cooking program.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The sensor or heating element may be faulty. Unplug the unit for 30 minutes to perform a hard reset. Plug back in and try a simple water test with 3 cups of water on ‘Manual’ for 5 minutes.

HEADS UP Always deglaze the pot with liquid after sautéing before pressure cooking. The ‘BURN’ message is a safety feature, not a failure.
