The Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet 2252 is equipped with a thermal overload protector, a safety mechanism designed to kill power to the motor when it reaches a critical temperature to prevent the windings from melting. When the vacuum kicks on for a second and then shuts off with a blinking power light, the internal thermostat has tripped. This is almost always caused by restricted airflow; when the motor cannot pull air through the system, it cannot cool itself, leading to a rapid heat spike. This failure is typically triggered by one of three things: a completely saturated foam filter, a "plug" of pet hair and debris lodged in the intake throat (the area where the brush roll meets the dirt tank), or a blockage in the hose. To confirm this is a thermal issue and not an electrical failure, feel the motor housing near the handle; if it is hot to the touch, the thermal switch is definitely the culprit. If the vacuum is cold but still shuts off, you may have a faulty power cord or a broken connection at the swivel neck.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps precisely to reset the system and clear the airflow restrictions.
- Complete Power Down: Unplug the unit from the wall outlet immediately. Do not attempt to restart it for at least 30 to 60 minutes. The thermal switch requires a full cool-down period before it will reset.
- Deep Clean the Filtration System: Press the release button to remove the dirt tank. Remove both the foam filter and the pleated filter. Rinse them under warm tap water until the water runs clear. Use a mild detergent if they are greasy. Crucial: These must air dry for a full 24 hours. Installing a damp filter creates a seal that blocks air, which will trip the thermal switch again instantly.
- Clear the Intake Throat: Turn the vacuum over and remove the brush roll by twisting the locking tabs. Look into the intake port leading toward the dirt tank. Use a flashlight to check for "hair donuts" or clumps of carpet fibers. Use a long screwdriver or a coat hanger to push any debris through into the tank.
- Inspect the Hose: Remove the hose from the chassis. Drop a heavy coin or a small marble through the hose; if it doesn't fall through the other end instantly, there is a clog. Use a vacuum shop-vac or a plumbing snake to clear the obstruction.
- Reassembly: Once filters are bone-dry and the intake is clear, reassemble the unit and test it on a hard floor surface first.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Brush Roll Belt: If the brush roll is jammed by a piece of string or a thick rug fringe, the motor will strain to turn the belt, creating massive internal heat. Cut away any wrapped hair or threads from the brush roll axle and ensure the roll spins freely by hand.
- Inspect the Swivel Neck Wiring: The 2252 model has a swivel joint that can fatigue over time. If the vacuum only shuts off when the handle is turned at a specific angle, the internal wiring in the swivel neck has likely frayed. This requires a replacement of the upper housing assembly.
- Test a Different Circuit: If the blinking light occurs without the motor feeling hot, you may be experiencing a voltage drop. Plug the vacuum into a different 120V circuit in another room, avoiding the use of extension cords or power strips, which can cause the motor to underperform and overheat.
- Verify the Tank Seal: Check the rubber gasket where the dirt tank connects to the motor head. If the seal is torn or missing, the vacuum will lose suction, causing the motor to run at higher RPMs than intended, which can trigger the thermal shutdown.

- Filter Maintenance: Wash your filters every 30 days. A clogged filter is the #1 cause of motor burnout on the CleanView series.
- Avoid "Deep Pile" Overuse: Using the vacuum on extremely thick shag rugs for extended periods restricts airflow significantly; switch to a hard floor for a few minutes to let the motor cool.
- Dryness is Key: Never use a hairdryer or oven to dry the filters; high heat can shrink the foam, creating gaps that allow dust to enter the motor, leading to permanent failure.
- Brush Roll Care: Cut hair off the brush roll weekly. A bogged-down brush roll puts immense mechanical stress on the motor, shortening its overall lifespan.
