Diagnosis
The failure of the brush roll to spin while the motor continues to hum is almost always a mechanical disconnection between the motor pulley and the brush roll. In the Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet 2252, this is typically caused by a snapped drive belt or a belt that has slipped off the pulley due to excessive resistance. When long pet hair, carpet fibers, or stray threads wrap around the brush roll, they migrate toward the end caps, creating a "binding" effect that increases friction. Because the motor is powerful, it will continue to spin the pulley even when the brush roll is seized. This creates intense heat and tension on the rubber belt, eventually causing it to snap or stretch to the point of slipping. You can confirm this by unplugging the unit and attempting to spin the brush roll by hand; if it spins freely but the vacuum doesn't work, the belt is broken. If it is nearly impossible to turn by hand, the roll is seized by debris, which caused the belt to fail.
How to Fix It
To restore the brush roll function, you must clear the mechanical obstruction and replace the drive belt. Follow these exact steps:
- Completely unplug the vacuum from the wall outlet to prevent accidental activation.
- Lay the vacuum flat on its back on a hard surface.
- Locate the brush roll cover. Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screws securing the bottom plate. Be careful not to lose the screws, as they are small and specific to this chassis.
- Lift the plate to expose the brush roll and the motor pulley.
- Inspect the belt. If it is snapped or stretched, remove the remnants from the motor shaft and the brush roll.
- Use a pair of heavy-duty scissors or a seam ripper to cut through the hair and string wrapped around the brush roll. Focus specifically on the ends of the roll where the debris bunches up against the plastic end caps.
- Pull the brush roll assembly out of the housing to clean the "hidden" area behind the end caps where hair often clumps and prevents the roll from spinning.
- Slide the brush roll back into place and ensure it rotates smoothly by hand.
- Install a new Bissell Model 203 replacement belt. Loop the belt around the motor pulley first, then stretch it over the brush roll. Ensure the belt is centered and not twisted.
- Reinstall the bottom plate and tighten the screws firmly but do not over-torque them, as the plastic housing can crack.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the brush roll motor itself. If you hear a clicking sound or a complete lack of motor noise (despite the suction motor running), the brush roll motor may have burned out. This requires a full motor assembly replacement, as the 2252 uses a separate motor for the agitator.
- Inspect the brush roll end caps for cracks. If the plastic end cap has cracked or shifted, the brush roll will sit crooked in the housing, causing it to rub against the plastic casing and seize regardless of the belt's condition.
- Verify the "Swivel" mechanism. Ensure the neck of the vacuum is not jammed with debris. While the swivel doesn't power the brush, a severe blockage in the neck can sometimes trigger a safety trip in the electrical circuit if the unit has an overload protector.
- Examine the pulley wheel for wear. If the motor pulley has a smooth, worn-down edge, a new belt will simply slip off again. In this case, the pulley wheel must be replaced to provide the necessary grip for the rubber belt.

- Prevent future belt snaps by clearing the brush roll every 2-3 weeks using the integrated grooming tool or scissors; never let hair build up to the point where the roll becomes difficult to turn.
- Avoid vacuuming heavy rugs or thick shag carpets on the "High" setting for extended periods, as this puts maximum strain on the Model 203 belt.
- Always check the belt tension after the first 10 minutes of use following a replacement to ensure the belt has seated correctly on the pulley.
- Do not use lubricant or WD-40 on the brush roll ends, as this attracts more dust and hair, which will lead to a faster buildup of debris and another belt failure.
